Talking to a lady in the bank the other day the subject came up of people withdrawing fairly large amounts of cash. She said she has seen people withdraw sums of $100,000-$300,000 cash and walk out the door alone.

Later I got to thinking just how high is a stack of, say, $100,000 in $100 bills.

It's pretty damned big. I used to work at a grocery store and we'd count down the office every night. The bills were "bound" by denomination already but it was still quite a lot and nowhere NEAR the amounts you're talking.

A normal sized briefcase can hold about 2 million dollars in $100 bills.

You see that in the movies all the time, where they open the case that's full of money. I usually think. I don't think you can get that much money in that small of a case.

Some years ago I was going to get the cash to pay for a new car. I asked if there was a larger bill than a hundred (there use to be didn't there)?

Brand new bills, yes. If they've been unwrapped then it's about a million give or take.

A stack of bills contains 100 bills, I'm pretty sure. So $100,000 is 10 stacks of $100 bills.

$500 bills used to be semi-common. The Treasury took all bills over $100 off the market to cut the drug traffickers ability to move large amounts of cash easily.

There are up to $100,000 bills (Woodrow Wilson) and there are 5 of those in circulation last time I checked.

So, if my high school math hasn't failed me, a $100,000 in new bills is 4 inches high.

I have to keep that in mind when getting money for the next gun show.

How much does that briefcase of $2 million weigh? Do I need a wheeled cart?

You really want a shoulder strap and reinforced handles. That's for sure.

Years ago I user to be a serviceman for coin wrapping equipment so got to spend much of my workday in bank vaults. One day, the vault teller in a large Dallas bank asked me if I wanted to see something special.

    Sure, I said...

And he then handed me a genuine 10,000 dollar bill.

I was told that they would get them several times a year and he would hold them for his 'cash' customers who wanted big bills. This was in the Texas oil boom era, when there was plenty of money and work, not recently in the povertous Zero-world we now live in.

He let me put it in my wallet (briefly) just so I could say that I once had a 10k bill in my pocket.

He was a really cool guy, nice as could be, and had a huge 44 mag on his hip all the time. That bank is long gone, absorbed multiple times, and dispersed into the banking nothingness of today.

Ronaldo, thinking of the good old days...

If you go into a bank and withdraw 300k in cash, I bet there are a ton of people in DC that know about it pretty fast.

    For sure.

About getting the cash for the new car. The teller said, No problem but they had to fill out a form telling the Feds I withdrew over $10,000 cash.

I tried to withdraw 12k three weeks ago and the bank teller went into a tizzy. From her reaction you would have thought I was robbing the place. I backed it down a couple of k because anything over 10 they have to report. I didn't want anybody in my "bi-ness".

When I was in grade school we toured a bank. The manager took us in the vault and he had a $10,000 bill laying on a table in the middle of the rooom. For some reason I still have a strong visual of that table and bill to this day. Back then it would have bought more than three new cars, now it would buy half to a third of one.

When I was a vault teller at a bank I remember seeing a $500 bill. I think the reason for doing away with it was that it was mainly drug dealers and other criminals who used them.

Wish I had kept one, here's what they go for:
