Deputy Loses Job After Locking Himself In Cell

COLUMBIA, Ky. (AP) -- The Adair County sheriff says one of his deputies has lost his job after accidentally locking himself in a jail cell and trying to shoot his way out of it.

Adair County Sheriff Ralph Curry says no one was hurt when Charles Wright fired his weapon.

The incident occurred Monday, the first day the new $12.4 million Adair County Judicial Center had opened to the public after being under construction for more than a year.

Curry told WKYT-TV on Tuesday that the former deputy has claustrophobia and has agreed to pay for the damage he did to the cell.

Barney Fife lives! He shouldn't have tried to shoot the lock. Before too long, Otis would have been along and let him out when he needed the cell for himself.

Someone please tell me how this tool locked himself in a cell? Do those doors lock automatically? It's been a long time since I've worked in/around a jail.

Well, depending on configuration, cell doors lock automatically when closed. It's for the protection of the occupants so that they have a sort of safe harbor where I work, as long as they have that set up to live with.

Secondly, there should be able to disable the automatic locking system of a cell door before doing searches of a cell.

Thirdly, he should not be carrying a gun in a confinement area. It should be pepper spray, and maybe a ASP or similar.

At least they found out his problem in a controlled environment and not out on the street when his fellow officers might be depending on him.

Did he think no one would find out. Lets find the inmate who brought in a gun and shot the lock, but after doing so stayed in jail. It is good that people like this get removed from law enforcement before they hurt/kill themselvs or coworkers.

It just keeps getting better, don't it?
If he had his gun on him, wouldn't he also have a radio or his cell phone so he could have called someone?

Why did he have his gun? Well, so he could shot his way out, just in case he locked himself in a cell, that's why? Come on, people...this young man was clearly thinking ahead.
He was also carrying a large knife on his belt, so if he ever got his clothes stuck in a cell door, he could cut himself out.
Its textboor tactics folks. Don't any of you read Tactical Jailor?

He's probably gonna get offered his own reality show.
