I heard a rumor that some years ago, Springfield Armory (the new, Illinois-based company) started making a limited run of M1 Garands.

It seems that the market would embrace a new M1 Garand, as a purchase through CMP seems like a huge pain in the ass and used versions are usually beat up and start at around $1,200.

I'd love to get a NEW M1 Garand, made to original WWII specs. Any chance of this happening?

Not really, because more than likely, the receivers would be cast and not forged like the originals.

The so-called Springfield Armory did make a run of 'new' M1 Garands about a decade ago, as evidenced by my local gunsmith/machinist, they were crap.

Depends on which receivers were used in the run. Some were crap some were decent.

The M1 receiver has a lifetime of over 20,000 rounds. Most of the rifles sold by the cmp have seen 5-10,000 rounds. The barrels wear out the fasted followed by the bolts. The operating rods can be reconditioned by welding the tab and by fitting a new piston head. Gas cylinders can still be found easily. That's why Springfield had problems with theirs.

You can be a "correct" grade from the CMP for 1100 dollars and have a USGI rifle that was never used in combat and is in extremely good shape. If you want a new stock they have an option for that as well. In actuality CMP is not as difficult to order from as most people fear, it's daunting the first time but hten you get addicted.

I see used ones all of the time in $7-800 range. Getting one from the CMP isn't that hard, and the Special model comes with a new barrel and stock for about $1000. I'm sure SA would want $1600 or more and there probably isn't much of a market.

Frankly, I like the look of the used and abused stock versus the new one. Adds character.

Springfield Armory (the business) did make Garands in the late 80's and early 90's. It was a failure due to the massive numbers of rifles that Blue Sky and CMP imported at that time. It's hard to sell a new-made Garand when excellent originals are available for lower cost.
Buying from CMP is not a hassle. They ship directly to your door, not your FFL. And the prices are very reasonable compared to buying from a dealer. Timing is everything, so keep an eye on their website for the better rifles to be available.

And depending on the cartouches, can add considerable value!

CMP M1's are the real deal.
There are no import stamps or markings.
They are inspected and repaired by armorers, not Bubba the "gun guy" down the street. They are head spaced and test fired.
They were United States Governmet property that were loaned/leased to other countries. Uncle Sam got them back, sold them to CMP, and now we have a chance to purchase a piece of American history for about $600.

No newly produced M1 can say any of that. Period.

You can order by mail but a trip to the North Store (Port Clinton, OH) is an experience in itself. There you will be able to hand pick the M1 of your choice. Surplus ammo, bayonets, and accessories are also avaialable for purchase.

After completing your initital paperwork, subsequent ordering is a breeze and much less a hassle than filling out a 4473.

Well... I purchased my 1944 "Danish return" from a private individual who had taken it in trade and was not much of a collector of such things. It was missing any documents that it came through CMP by this time. However I am fairly certain it did. Mine had, at some point a good time back, been re-barreled with a Marlin barrel and was perfectly done long ago. Marlin once had a contract for these back in the 50's I believe. So now I have one that has no throat or muzzle wear and perfect riffling as well as a great aged patina. It has period correct internals otherwise but overall its a perfect example and a great shooter. It had a European Beech stock on it when I got it and the danish naval engraving on the sight cover. I kept this feature as it identifies it as a lend lease and European theater gun. It still had its original walnut hand guards when I got it. I then replaced that Beech stock with a period correct (but otherwise not spectacular or specially marked) Walnut stock for pretty cheap. I actually bought two stock before I got the one I wanted and kept the one that matched up with the original hand guards the best and resold the other one. And I think I have $750 in it total. This was only two years back. And I think you can look around and find something that will please you for around $800 I should think.

Here is a picture of the stock it came with up against the replacement Walnut I put on it

Danish Anchor and markings (kept this feature)...

And this is the resulting gun... note the character of the stock and how it now matches the hand guards? Dings, color and all? This is what you want... you want to see the service its given... you don't want a new gun. Some remade example. You want a gun that actually DID something. Its priceless.... and not all that expensive either. Keep looking.

Only problem with the CMP for me is finding a club. There are none locally and besides that I kind of hate to join a club just to buy a gun, with absolutely no intentions of ever participating.

I guess I'm going to have to breakdown and do it though as I'd love to have an M1 and the CMP is the best source.

The Garand was still on Springfield's website in 07-08. They also offered them in .308.

Get a real one.

OP, I see you're in Indiana. Go to the North Store & pick out a real Garand for yourself. The people there are very helpful & are only too happy to help you out with selecting a REAL piece of history. I'm LE & have club affiliations, but they told me that if I wasn't, they could get me a club membership on the spot.

The place is like a candy store. Racks & racks of Garands, separated into the different grades, with throat erosion & muzzle wear markings on each one. I came away with a Service Grade that's a real tack driver for $595 & I'm planning a trip out there again for a Special Grade in the near future.

If you get one, be prepared to draw a crowd when you go to the range. Everyone there will want to handle it.

BTW; get at least 2 cans of surplus ammo while you're there. They have great prices on ammo, too.

Lots of info here:
