I just recently bought my first handgun - Glock G17. I love the way it feels, the full size grip etc., it makes excellent range and home defense weapon, but I am not really sure this is the gun I would want to carry once I get my license (still might end up carrying it, you never know).
In case it doesn't work out, rather then selling it and getting a G19 (which I held and didn't like as much, especially because of a short grip), I was thinking of picking up a Mac in decent shape. I held one a long time ago, and I remember it had a good sized grip but still felt like a very consealable weapon.
I realize it has smaller capacity and weaker round than a Glock 9mm, however I doubt that in a typical street self defense situation I'd be engaging in a prolonged shootout at 25 yards. More likely 1-2 shots at close distances, and the Makarov round seems more than adequate for that. If I can pick a Mak for about $200, seems like a no-brainer.
So, can you please recommend me a good place to start looking for them. What would be a good price ? What particular issues to watch out for ? Also, are there any particular makes to avoid. As I understand, the quality rating (best to worst) supposedly goes like that: East German > Bulgarian > USSR (pre-91) > Russian (post-91) > Chinese. Is this correct ?
Doubt you will find a like new one for $200. There are unissued Bulgarians selling now for $299 on the net. Would likely be 1980's but in new conditions with holsters, two mags, cleaning rod and a lanyard. Warning, it will be packed in cosmolene.
