I like that idea! And I agree, at least marginally, on your other points. For me, it wasn't a debate so much as an argument. Both coulda been better but no clear winner for me. I turned it off a bit early to watch the local news ....

I agree with your overall assessment but you missed two huge points that could cost Biden the election.

Biden refused to even counter Trump's assertion that Biden would do another shutdown and Biden even doubled down by saying you have to "fix" the virus before you can open up the country. That's huge and Trump needs to hammer that home. Biden also refused to pledge not to pack the Supreme Court. Trump needs to get those messages out to America loud and clear.

I REALLY like this idea. Sadly, it'll never happen.

Also dropped the ball again...he was served up a perfect opportunity to correct the Charlottesville "lie" once and for all with a huge audience...he did not.

Debate had little effect on majority of voters. However, one MAJOR thing happened that helped Trump and many missed it. So Biden spent two months trying to win over Bernie supporters and the extreme far left. Even went so far as to sign a multi page agreement (manifesto) with Bernie. It lays out all of the socialist policies that Bernie and his “Bernie Bros” support. And Trump baited him into disavowing that last night. He even had him break away from Bernie. He also had him disavow the green new deal publicly (although Biden’s website pledges his support for it). These are major things. These far lefties have to be pissed today. They never were Biden supporters until their heroes like Bernie and AOC cozied up to Biden. Now he distanced himself from both of them in the debate. These voters have to support him or he has zero chance. They are why Hillary lost. She never got the votes from these people. And now, it appears Joe just pooped on them too.

Biden called the President a clown, a fool, and told him to "shut it" a number of times. That's the sitting POTUS. I'm certainly not a Biden supporter, but if I was, that would cost him my vote right there.

No question by Wallace as to how Biden was going to pay for his magnificent green new deal ( can you say oppressive taxation and as far as corporation taxes that just gets passed along to the consumer - which is you and me).

Yeah I think Trump watched tape of Romney getting humiliated by Obama in 2012 with Crowley’s help and Biden spanking Ryan and went into this with the mindset that turning the entire night into a ****show was better than letting Biden have so much as one humiliating dunk on him.

Democrats do no seem to be uniformly taking a victory lap right now. They’re calling for no more debates, indicating they only think Joe has something to lose and nothing to gain doing it again.

It's funny that you said that. I was telling my wife the same thing, with a few possibilities:
    - Trump's done, his businesses are losing money, he's sick of the constant hate from the left and he's throwing it (which I didn't think was likely, but possible). I'd rather see him win and bow out somehow (medically?), leaving the throne to Pence for the rest of his term than to lose to Biden.
    - He's just so stubborn and headstrong that he feels that he knows better than anyone else. I've seen a marked change in his demeanor and the way he talks to the press over the last four years, so I know he knows he had to change, and to his credit, did.
    - He's just not smart enough (obviously he wouldn't be where he is (billionaire and president of the US) without being smart, so just frustration with that one last night.

Like I said, I don't hate Trump, will still vote for him, and so will his base. But, if he's smart he can keep his base and also pull in those who are undecided. I can't imagine anyone who is undecided (which also means they are uninformed, so they may not know what is happening in Portland, Seattle, Chicago, etc.) going to his side last night, so hopefully at worst last night was a draw and he can up his game for the second debate by actually listening to his debate prep team and not thinking he knows more than they do. I'd expect an improvement.

    I guess we'll see.

Bingo, one of the half a dozen times when I thought, Trump's got him here (minority unemployment lowest in history). Lost opportunity.

Isn't turning off the microphone at the end of their 2 minutes the simple fix to the chaos?

Move them farther apart. When their time is up, turn off the mike.

They will be forced to make clear, concise, 2 minute answers and not interrupt one another.

I remember it well. Biden was constantly interrupting and loudly sighing into the mic. He would have done it again but his dementia prevented him from really understanding where he was. That's why Biden came across as frail, weak, lethargic, and unaware of his surroundings.
