He has two 1-year old pups from a litter - the mom wasn't involved for some reason.

They were both shot - one had 3 through-n-through and hit nothing vital, so it survived. The other was dead from several gunshot wounds - most through-n-through too.
But both dog collars with his name and phone number were missing.

The dogs were on his 40 acre property, not chasing cows or horses and not being a pest. The shooting appears to be from over the fence onto his yard as he found 22 cal brass along the south fence line.

The nearest official pistol/rifle firing range is over 3/4 mile away from his house.

He's deaf and never heard the shots.

Anybody here got a reading or feeling for this?

Is he feuding with any of his neighbors? Does someone want to get rid of he furry alarm system as a lead up to a burglary (although I think this is really reaching.) Sadistic random act (more worrying if you know about the relationship between serial killers and animal killings.)

I'd think the first one is the most likely, and the other too are overly paranoid.

I’m so sorry to hear this. I hope he finds out who did it, and s/he is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. In addition, may the perpetrator be socially punished by the animal lovers in the community.

Hugs and peace sent for your friend.

Lots of people just want to kill things.

My buddy in TX loses atleast one to two cows per year to shots from the road

My friend is a pretty laid-back, easy going cowboy of pure Montana stock. Both his parents were born of true Montana pioneers and the family has lived on an ever-dwindling acerage, next to some BLM land so there's not much chance for a neighbor Hatfield/McCoy thing here.

Besides, he's got no real neighbors on the other two sides --- just the pistol/rifle range that bought extra boundary-zones to keep people from complaining about the shooting noise.

Like I said - he's deaf and cannot hear shooting anyway - so he's golden, living there and wouldn't even know if the range was active or not.

Did the dogs get out and cause issues once in a while ?? Seems like some evil person... who shoots a dog ??? Unless the dogs were really bothering my animals or kids I cant imagine who would do that. Angry messed up kids driving on the road ??

Montana has "rules" about dogs messing with cattle - running them or generally pestering them. Any rancher can shoot any offending animal that hurts or molests their cattle or horses, but there are no neighbors to speak of and the dogs wear collars with the boundary wires ending 'way before the fence line and end of the driveways.

So - I don't think they were out of bounds at all. Besides, if they were, would the perp drop the dogs in two widely different areas minus their collars? One dog was over 1/4 mile away from the other.

The "missing collar thing" is most bothersome.....

Somebody from the gun range most likely. Was DJT Junior in the area?

That was my first thought - but there's a serious berm between the range and his property - put there to keep any lead from actually hitting his house.

The pistol range likes him there and because of his deafness, they actually want him to stay.

Hiking from the gun range to his house is full of feral multi-generational weeds, boulders and rocks (Montana potatoes), deadwood and furrows from drainage control from the mountain snow runoff in spring - so trekking from the range to his property has to be a very dedicated walk.

This most likely. I've hunted (once and never again) with people who would kill anything that flew, walked or crawled. Even shoot at trout in a stream.

That rules out accident or ricochet from the gun range. Some people out there are just sick in the head.

I am guessing the dogs barked and he could not hear it and this person thought they were dealing with it. Any chance they got off the property and killed chickens or something?

Either the shooter was very close or the dogs stood still during multiple gun shots.

Nice work Kojak. You certainly solved that one quickly.

It pains me greatly to say this but, he's probably right.

    Some people are just *******s.

I'm sorry about your friend's dogs.

Since I like most dogs more than than I do people, I wish we could hunt scumbags like that. Like mentioned above, more than likely pieces of human filth looking for something to shoot to make themselves feel superior and using the collars for trophies.
