Sad, just sad. I have to ask the law enforcement members here. Is there such a thing as discretion in situations like this? Was it really necessary to arrest the kid?

These are pretty common in the world. I wonder if there is one around the school somewhere. I heard on the news he was arrested for making a fake bomb. I wonder what defines that.

Next time kid stick to spending all your time playing xbox we need more of those people than engineers anyways......

Back when I was in 9th grade, the school would have supplied me with stuff it took to make what this kid made... We made stuff like this in technology class all the time.

    What a shame.

We are just going off the news story and yep it sounds bad. Irving PD is pretty squared away and their PIO said the student was nowhere near as forthcoming as he was speaking with the media so who you gonna believe - A young HS student who has a lot to gain by a bogus story or a PIO who goes on record with the media who has a lot to lose by being untruthful?

I would like to see what the clock looked like before I would go one way or the other with this along perhaps with some input from a bomb squad guy as to whether or not it looked anything like a potential device.

Well, when it comes to school related issues, you can be sure that if you take the lesser action - you will be accused of under reaction....and if you take the route of larger action - you will be accused of overreaction.

It only looks like a bomb if your reference for bombs comes from cartoons where all bombs have big red LED displays with a countdown timer.

I understand you are indicating that looks nothing like a homemade trigger/timer. If the bomb squad people agreed it would seem to strengthen the outrage a bit except that if it looks like it might be a bomb to an untrained person, that might be an element of the hoax bomb crime.

Kid wanted to get attention. Guess he succeeded.

He was like, ‘That’s really nice,’” Mohamed told the Dallas Morning News. “‘I would advise you not to show any other teachers.’”

During English class, the clock beeped, annoying his teacher. When he brought the device up to her afterward, she told him “it looks like a bomb,” according to Mohamed.

How does what you quoted, show he wanted attention?

    Funny story about that...

I used to work at a company that made motor control centers (basically cabinets filled with PLCs, breakers, stuff like that). They used to occasionally get bomb threats. The police were asked what they look for during a bomb check and one said "a plastic device with wires coming out of it."

This is the inside of a motor control center....

umm - Officer, could you be a LITTLE more specific?
