    Some people argue that 380 is just as good as 9mm in short barreled pistols like the PM9 or Rohrbaugh R9.

    Please share your thoughts...

    I'd prefer not to get shot with a .380 or a 9mm.

    There seems to be a number of very compact 9mm's that are about the same size as .380's and 9mm ammo is both cheaper and easier to find in many areas. Give me the 9.

    Hello;

    Thoughts? Always carry the biggest round you can shoot the best. They make 9's that are about the same (basic) size as a 380.

    If it was me, I would carry the 9.

    .380= 9mm Corto/Kurz/Short.

    Roughly half as powerful as 9mm Parabellum/9x19/Luger

    Negative.

    At it's best, a .380 will drive a 90-100gr bullet about 1150fps from a typical Walther PP sized pistol, less from a small .380 like the Ruger LCP/KT P3AT.

    From even a (rare) snubnose revolver or 3" barreled pistol, the 9x19 will achieve similar velocities with 124-127gr bullets, or more.

    I've shot both hot .380 and regular 9mm (WW I think it was) at some 3/8" white ash slats spaced similar to ribs on a target. The hot .380 rounds stuck in the wood just deep enough I had to pry them out with a knife. The 9mm went right through like they weren't even there.
    Considering a COM shot will probably need to get through ribs, I carry a .40 with the .380 as a BUG that I don't have a lot of faith in, but the gun fits were nothing else will. Still a .380 is better than no gun or even a .32. I wonder if it is actually better than a high round 22.

    I have done some tests on .32acp and it isn't as weak as many people think.

    Both are lethal even out of short barrels. I don't think the BG would be any less dead if you shot him with a .380 than with a 9mm out of a short barrel.

    However, OP, your question is sure to stir up the hornets nest around here. :supergrin:

    Of course, shot placement still rules. You also have to consider basic physics in the real world. Your target may not be a 120 lb. runt wearing a tee shirt, he may be a 220 lb. dood wearing heavy clothes. I'll take the round with higher momentum and kinetic energy every time, especially given that they're both available in similar size packages.
