Which would you go with, Sigma, or Tamron?

Buying from BH unless I find a better deal for a new lens.

Why did you rule out Canon?

Tamron, if I didn't want to spend the money on O.E.

Mainly budget. $140-$199 for Sigma & Tamron vs. $500 for the Canon.

Thanks nipperwolf. I think I'll go with the Canon.

This is a different lens (75-300). Its reviews are also mixed at best:

The more expensive Canon lens has very good reviews, but as you said, the price is commensurate:

I used to collect cheap lenses. Then I had a bunch of lenses I didn't like. My grandfather used to say, "We are too poor to buy cheap." I mostly failed to follow that wisdom(1), but I am working on changing that. Sometimes knowing the right path and walking it are two different things. ;)

    (1) Except for computer and networking equipment, because here I know better from experience.
