I havent gotten around to buying a 500 smith and wesson yet but want one for Grizzly Bear defense. What are the differences in velocity for the different barrel lengths? I want to be able to control it and get enought velocity for the big round. I also want to be able to carry it on the belt. Who makes holsters for these? Considering between 3 and 14 inches...

How much muzzle vel does this have? Is it close to a 3030 or 12 guage?

I think a 6 incher would be adaquate.

    But, wouldn't a 30/30 or a 12Ga be a better bear defense weapon?

Wouldn't a 6" be a little hard to un-holster quickly and take aim on a charging bear?

Any barrel length .500 Mag is MORE than enough for any bear. With 440gr hard cast slugs it will out penetrate a .375 H&H Mag, absolutely dwarfs any .30-30.

Dick Metcalf of Shooting Times shot a large cape buffalo with a 6.5 or 7.5" barreled .500 Mag. Broke the front shoulder and penetrated about
5.5 ft of animal, one shot kill.

I have a couple of the .500s and you have to see what it will do to targets, it makes .308 Win rifles look like pea shooters (I've shot them side by side).

The issue isn't power it's the accuracy of the shooter. If you can't place the shots and flinch like a mother, forget it. If you don't practice a good deal with it, you're probably better off with a 12ga shotgun with slugs. Don

My friend has a short barrel S&W 500 and the recoil is suprising manageable. It has the muzzle brake which probably does a lot to tame it but what ever they did to it makes it a nice shooter. Real nice gun!

You want to wear a 5 pound pistol on your belt and hike thru bear country?

You the man. Might as well go for all 8 inches for full effect.

I want to get up to Alaska. I'll probably go w/ a 45-70 lever.

You might think about this too:

You're considering up to a 14" revolver for "belt carry"?

May I ask, what do you do that puts you at risk for Grizzly Bear attack?

This is the proper answer. Get the barrel length you want to carry but make sure you practice with it so you can hit when you need to.

Get a .460 instead. It's second to the .500 in power but first in velocity.

You also have the advantage of being able to fire .454casull and .45colt out of the same gun.

I'd just take a buddy that I know for a fact runs slower than I do. Problem solved.

I was reading an article when it came out about how they were hunting with it around Africa. Seems to work great. It dropped water buffalo in one shot, and even an elephant!

Out of a really long barrel it might out penetrate the 375 with expanding rounds, but solid to solid, the 375 will walk away from the 500. A 300 grain solid from a H&H has a much better ballistic coefficient, and sectional density.

Its a fine handgun round, but its not in the league of the big boy rifles.

Dick's article is pretty much proof of that. The 375 H&H is fairly well known for breaking both shoulders and exiting a cape buffalo.

Im sure if you flashed a S&W500 toward a Grizzly, his only thoughts would be how many rabbits its going to take to get droppings from the confines of his fur.

If you check John Linebaughs annual seminars, you'll see that the big revolvers are right up with the .458 Win penetration wise. Don

    I have this ^^^

When bears see it they kill themselves...(this saves me money..no ammo expended)....because...

They know the bullet that comes out is bad....

and they hate being set on fire from the muzzle flash
