I have a 5 year old laptop that had been my daughter's. The hard drive died, so we got her a new laptop.

I replaced the bad drive and have performed a clean install of Vista which came with it.

The laptop has Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.1 Ghz and 4 Gb of RAM.

I will probably just use it for forums, a little social media, cleaning up the occasional pic with Photoshop Elements, and the young ones playing some web-based kid's games.

I've never really held onto a PC long enough to consider an OS upgrade.

Thoughts on leaving it as a clean install of Vista, or moving to Windows 8?

    Thanks.

We'll sir, this is just me talking but I refuse to attempt to use windows 8. Some people like it, me I can't use it. Random stuff comes up when I'm trying to navigate it, I just gave up

From the pictures that reminds me of my Mac OS. I may try that on my old Sony laptop

I have it on a couple of "old" laptops, pretty solid OS, and I need to hone my linux skills.

What a state that Microsoft is in if a serious discussion can be had on whether an 8 year old OS is better than the current one. Which it is, as 8 truly blows.

Ubuntu is an interesting suggestion. I was a Unix administrator in the late 80s and early 90s. I ran very early versions of Slackware and Red Hat (think floppy diskettes) into the early 2000s, but it has probably been close to a decade since I last ran Linux.

In this case, pictures are not worth a 1000 words. I LOVE Linux, but other than cosmetics, there is little comparison.

Well, if you want to get your feet wet again, Ubuntu or Mint is where you want to start.

Only if you already have a copy. Personally, I'd avoid investing the kind of money Windows 8 cost into a 5 yo laptop with a dual core processor.

Like everyone says don't get Win 8 (although I don't hate it).

For what you want Vista will work fine- I think MS will continue with security updates through 2017 but still if it were me I wouldn't connect it to my home network just in case. Of course the alternatives to MS are OK if you want to play around with something different.

My G/F bought a new laptop last year with Windows 8. She absolutely hates it and wishes she would have bought an older model on the shelf with Windows 7 for less money.
