Does anyone have a 40 Super conversion barrel? I'm curious about this cartridge and would love to hear some first-hand info about how it performs and what it is like to reload for.

Thanks

I thought about it for a minute, but decided to stay with 10mm instead. Although .40Super is a little more powerful, you give up some things. First of all, the ammo is REALLY scarce. Even if you reload, the brass is scarce, and expensive. Bullets are plentiful since it uses .400" bullets. Second, the platform is a compromise. You have to use a G21 slide, which is severely under weighted for the cartridge. The 10mm G20 slide is much heavier and thicker (internally), and would be the ideal platform, but cannot be used. This is a problem because the lighter slide increases recoil. That means you have to run a REALLY heavy recoil spring, which decreases reliability. Also, frame battering would likely be an issue.

Personally, I think your needs would be better served with a G20. With a 6" barrel, you can get very close to .40Super ballistics, and you get the benefits of the heavier slide. Plus, ammo is plentiful, and with the large 10mm community, components, brass, and load data will never become rare. I just don't think there's enough benefit to compensate for the issues.

EDIT: Actually, I just looked at Double Tap's .40Super ammo, and I can beat most of it with 10mm. I just chronographed some 135gr Nosler JHPs out of my 6" G20LS that averaged 1800fps flat. His .40Super was at 1755fps from a 6".

Thanks, 21Carrier. I think I'll heed your advice and put together a 20 long slide. Thanks to theglockside as well for the link to the informative thread. I like oddball cartridges, but I agree that hot 10mm will meet all my needs.

I appreciate the info and advice.

Agree with the previous posts, go with a G20L.

I have a .40 Super in a very robustly built 1911 and I would not do it again. I have about 1200 rounds of my original 2000 rounds left. I'm running a 22 or 24# spring and often consider getting it Magnaported (6" barrel in a 5" slide) just for the sake of reducing the slide velocity. It's a beast. I shot an Antelope buck at 175 yards with it, but when I went elk hunitng, I took the 10mm and that dropped a 550 pound cow at 80 yards with one shot.

That's good to hear. I seriously considered the caliber when I was about to order my G20LS slide, but even with a solid-top long slide, I think the slide mass would be too light for it. The 10mm slides have thicker sides, and are just built better for the high power loads. I think .40Super is a great cartridge in search of a gun that can really handle it. You would really need a purpose built gun to handle it well. I guess you could always use a compensator with the LWD G21LS slide. That might actually be the solution. Still, ammo and component availability would suck.

For the sake of completeness in this thread as a reference for anyone interested in the .40 Super conversion in the future, I can add the following link at WarriorTalk.com. The linked discussion at WT is filled with recent, useful information and conclusions presenting the good news and bad news about the .40 Super caliber conversion. It was very helpful.
