Going to go pick up some 180gr. winter clothes ammo for my newly acquired USP 40. Gold Dots, HST, what’s everyone liking in a heavier.40 round? Been carrying Gold Dots in 9mm and .45 forever, just curious what y’all like in a .40?
What is "Winter Carry"? 180 Gold dot is OK. I prefer HST or Golden Saber. I have a FN that chokes on regular HP, so it gets a diet of 175 gr. Critical Duty. Fulls size pistol. I also prefer 165 grain, but that is subjective and I have a case of 180 HST in the closet. For the price I got it, I can be versatile. Happy Obsessing
Urban legend unless you carry a light round in 32 or 380. That Carhartt didn't stop the rounds the NYPD put into it and the BG, Epstien didn't kill himself, and service calibers will work until extreme cases, then, none of them will. On average 165 grain 40 will give you a few inches more penetration, even though the 180 is the anointed weight. Happy Obsessing
Of the tests I’ve seen the 165 gr. HST’s performed the best: View: https://youtu.be/z1DeT4hana0 If someone has better data I’d like to see it, I’ll be placing an order soon! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I like the Federal HST either 165 or 180 grain whichever is more accurate in your gun. I wouldn't go any lighter than 165 grains. But 175 grain Critical Duty is the most accurate in my G23. Winchester Ranger 40 S&W 180 Grain T-Series Bonded is supposed to be good, too. Heavier bullets have two things going for them. One, is that compared to lighter weight projectiles they develop more momentum, and two is that they have greater sectional density. An arrow weighs about 450 grains total weight but only develops about 350 fps but it has tremendous sectional density (the ratio of a projectile's mass to its cross sectional area) which gives it the ability to penetrate. The heavier a bullet is in proportion to its diameter, the greater the sectional density and the greater the projectile's ability to penetrate. A 9mm 115 grain bullet has aa sectional density of 0.131 while a 124 grain 9mm has a sectional density of 0.141. A 165 grain 40 caliber bullet has a sectional density of 0.152 and a 180 grins 40 caliber bullet has a sectional density of 0.166.
Good Dots and HST are probably the top two. Not far behind, if at all, is Golden Saber Bonded, Winchester Ranger Bonded. There are a ton of great choices.
