What .380 ammo do you recommend for a S&W Bodyguard?
what grain also?
I use Fiocchi 95gr FMJ in mine.
.380 "defense ammo" is an oxymoron, not unlike "friendly divorce lawyer." I do own a .380 and ONLY use it as a 2ndary or a third CCW and never as a primary CCW as it's an "iffy" round at best and the best test results I've seen were with Corbin Pow'RBall & DPX. Forget the much lauded (overly so IMO) 12" penetration unless you are using hardball. Remember, it's a .380.
I use Buffalo Bore +p in either 90 or 95 grains. A fast DPX round should also be good. You question is a good one, lecture aside. There are times I cannot carry anything else.
FMJ. It's a .380, you can't get expansion and penetration.
I carry Speer Gold Dot's in my P238
WWB 95gr flat point FMJ in my LCP.
Hornady Critical Defense 90gr in 380, nothing else is needed!
DPX typically penetrates pretty well for the degree of expansion it shows in a given caliber, so if I were inclined to use an expanding bullet in the .380, it would probably be one of those loads.
Or the Remington Golden Saber or XTP. XTP is another known deep penetrator, and .380 needs it unless you load something solid. The Golden Saber I would like because it's the heaviest ordinarily offered .380 load, at 102 grains. Almost into the typical 9mm weight range.
I carry Hornady 90gr XTP in my Ruger LCP. I did some snooping around for tests and it seems to penetrate deeper than the majority of JHP while still showing some expansion. The XTP bullet is known for fairly deep penetration with fairly consistant but mild expansion size. Black Hills also offers the 90gr XTP ammo in 50rd boxes. I wouldn't carry the Critical Defense in larger calibers so I didn't even consider it for my .380 mouse gun. Its best to test the ammo in YOUR gun well.
Here are a couple of links I found useful in comparing 30 ammo.
