Why is 380 ammo so hard to get? No one has it. Not like it is a popular round, Oh wait it must be because no one has it.

    It's a popular CCW round.

My gun store has quite a bit of it in Blazer Bronze FMJ for $17 a box of 50. He has 3 less boxes today:cool:

Well first of all you should have stocked up two years ago.
    I did.
But given that you did not, I would just get on the cabelas waiting list,
it comes in from time to time, you will get charged when it comes in.
They normally get a lot of Sellier every few months, order a couple thousand rounds and wait.

I was told that the same machines used to make .380 are the same ones used to make 9mm, just with different dies. When 9mm production went up for the military, 380 stopped for a while. 380 is not back up to meet demand so supplies are low and prices are artificially high. There is no reason they can't up production.

I just checked Starline Brass and their .380 brass ($114/1,000) is back ordered until 4/22/10.

Even us reloaders are being held up.:)

whether it is in stock or not i dont know but it shows available currently unlike everything else on their site is out of stock. This might make someones day if it is shown correctly as in stock.

Plus buffalo bores 20rd hollow points are in stock at midway in various grains.

Edit: out of stock now, so at least some people got some ammo.

All ammo is hard to find. Why does this caliber surprise you? I also heard that manufacturers stopped making .380 for awhile so they could catch up on 9mm.

    That sucks...

I could drive to at least 6-7 different stores and gun shops tomorrow anywhere from a 10 minute-1 hour drive from here that almost always has .380 in stock priced $15-$20/50 rds.

Every time I buy a new caliber gun, I buy a case of ammo. This is three years old:

I remember a bizarre scene. At one point a couple of months ago I had so much
380 ammo I figured now was a great time to unload some.
Afterall my p3at isn't exactly fun to shoot a lot.
So I am standing in a parking lot with some guy and I have about 30 boxes to sell to this guy. He was complaining about the price, which was something like $25 a box.
I think I was making a whopping $5.00 a box for standing out in the middle of nowhere with this man conducting an ammo transfer.
But he asks me do I mind if he makes a phone call. I hear him say-
"YES! HE HAS 30 BOXES BOB!"
Hangs up and says " I'll take em all".
No more haggling on price, apparently he is selling them to yet another guy who was quite willing to pay anything.
    I felt like a drug dealer :)
I also felt like I should have charged him more.

I don't remember any problems with 380 ammo until Ruger came out with the LCP.

From what I"ve heard there were a few things 'causing' the shortage:

    1. .380 was less than 2% of total ammo production.
    2. Ruger comes out with the LCP.
    3. Obama gets elected.

380 is actually an extremely popular cartridge, as of late.

The reason for it is there are about a dozen newly designed little hide-out pistols on the market that are chambered for the 380.

    It's not just popular.......it's HOT!
