I recall talking with a police officer who also shoots IPSC not so long ago. He told me that he is glad seeing fewer and fewer .38 Super guns being used in the streets. When I asked him why, he was reluctant at first, but gave me insights on the .38 Super. He said that, the .38 Super was designed in 1929 primarily to penetrate body armor. In their department's tests, some .38 Super bullets which he declined to mention (because he didn't want the public to know what brands were effective),were able to breach some brands of body armor which, he again declined to name. Penetration with car bodies and glass of police vehicles is excellent with this caliber. Another thing he mentioned that we all (yes, that includes me), hate to admit, is that the .38 Super is ballistically superior to the .45 ACP. That has been proven in tests time and time again.
