The gun I'm building is hopefully going to make a good platform medium range+ as I venture into this area of shooting.

I think I've picked out a receiver combo (Mega Arms w/ monolithic upper) to get started with. After reading up on the different types of platforms (DPMS/armalite/knights/rra) What would be a good BCG and rifle stock buffer tube to go with? I'm not a fan of DPMS ar-15 BCGs (had major problems with one personally) I just want something reliable. Also any barrel suggestions in 20-24" are welcome.

Or should I wait to see what comes down the pipeline in the future from Spike's and other companies?

For 308 build I like the LMT stuff..

Shot the DPMS and the Armalite with a custom barrel..
but the new LMT is the bomb..

I like LMT myself, but cannot find .308 rifle parts listed on their site. I'm not really wanting to buy the whole rifle. I'm wanting to build geared more towards what I want while saving $ if there is such a thing with these oversize ARs. I'll have to check that out more and probably keep an eye out on ARF.com to see what's being floated around on the EE.

I built a 7-08 on a Mega MA-Ten platform about a year ago. I dont think you can do any better for a base if you are building your own. The Monolithic upper is an outstanding choice. Mine is the standard upper. I used JP Enterprises BCG and enhanced bolt. I dont reccomend them. The firing pin hole in the bolt is oversized and my primers tend to crater. Not a big deal but not worth the money. My gunsmith who assembled the build didnt like it either. Check Fulton Armory for a BCG, bolt and barrel combo. If you buy the barrel and bolt from them they will headspace it for you and then you really dont need a gunsmith to assemble it. They have good components. Rainier Arms also sells excellent barrels and will headspace a bolt for you too. I went the roundabout way; bought a Lilja 7mm blank, a custom chamber reamer from Pacific Tool and Guage PRI handguard etc., and had it assembled. I would do a few things differently today.

You have lots of great options building your own and will end up with THE BEST rifle for the money that you can get.

Thanks for that very useful info! I'll look up Fulton in the morning.

I hear you wanting to build your AR from various parts. Not having owned one in the past, I opted for a DPMS Panther 308 TAC20. For my occational shooting it is great. The fit and function are terrific. I paid about $1,000 out the door in S. Florida and don't regret having spent the money. I do believe a better trigger would help.

Good luck to you on your build and take a look at Tactical Machining for some of your parts. They might be able to help.

Pretty sure DPMS and Fulton are still cut by the same folks and are good to go.
Fulton put together my light profiled 18" upper and I'm very satisfied with it. My old Dpms 308 ap4 has been fine for years. I'd go with the chrome carrier whichever you can find cheaper. Any good milspec tube with 308 rifle buffer (Slash,DPMS,Enidine) will be fine.

For more $, Young MFG is doing 308 chrome carriers now for $190 as a special order item and SI Defense does very nice FailZeroed bcgs.
