If you were looking to get a 30 cal battle rifle what would you get and why? FAL, AR-10, M-1, FNAR, So-Com, etc.

I would get a M1a. Simply one of the best rifles ever made.

If I ever own a 'battle rifle' it'll be by inheritance, and I've no plan on doing so. In a 'what if' fantasy I'd have an Fn 5,7 because they're expensive and you're buying.

M1A if I had to choose. I have bolt guns in .308, but my fighting carbines are AR15's. I've just never been as fond of the AR10 as I am with the M1A.

I believe every able-bodied American male should own at least one fighting long-gun, just as our fore-fathers did-

FAL for general use, an AR-10 variant if precision were the order of the day.

The M14/M1A is better than the M1.

The FAL, M14, and G3 (HK-91, PTR-91) have all passed extensive testing and have been proven in combat. There's no clear consensus on which is "best." I wouldn't care which one I were given.

The FNAR is more of a sem-automatic sniper rifle than a battle rifle.

The SOCOM (I assume you mean 16" M1A, do not hyphenate) is super loud and has a lot of muzzle flash. It isn't pleasant to shoot. It is not accurate. It has a loopy trajectory. Stick with the original barrel lengths of these guns. 21" for the FAL, 22" for the M14, 18" for the G3.

I would have to buy a SCAR in 7.62 Nato. If not that then a M1A. My two AR15s would not cut it much past 300 yards.
Anyone who says that the M1A is not accurate is very, very mistaken. I would get the 18 inch barrel but even with the 16 incher it is more accurate than most people can shoot!!

I would probably go with the FAL or the G3. They work and shoot well and parts are easy to come by.

The 16" ones really aren't that accurate. I had a 22" and a 16.25" set up similarly same way. The 22" one would shoot 2" groups at 100 yards, the 16.25" one would shoot 4" groups at 100 yards. Also please note I tried various front and rear sights with the SOCOM. So it was not just an issue of a fat front sight.

I really like my AR-10. But I like my FAL more, even though it is not as accurate and heavier than the AR-10. The M14 and Garand are also really nice guns. If I was to buy only one it would be a nice DSA FAL, or a DPMS AR-10 (they make PMAGs for these now... stupid Armalite:steamed:)

I'd have to pick the PTR-91 here. It's a VERY good G3 clone and the G3 was the original HK and the "grandfather" of the entire HK line. For over fifty years, everything in the HK lineup from sniper rifles to sub-machineguns were directly based on the G3's roller locked action and their still going strong to this day! It is by FAR the single most influential, versatile and proven battle rifle ever.

For what use? And what's the budget?

I'm an FAL man, but my vote goes to SR-25, LaRue OBR, REPR...
