Backlit keys, really? I keep my backlit keys off. Have used a couple of times. Would not consider necessary at all.

I have a company Mac but it won't talk to Siemens without a lot of "stuff" so company IT said just get a Windows laptop.

I looked at Walmart when I was getting some nachos and the prices seemed very cheap on some laptops. I am computer dumb but I wouldn't think that I need much just to download a program to a Siemens HMI.

I like the backlit keys quite a bit. And I agree with the thought of testing a laptop first. If I had spent any time really trying this one I would have noticed the touchpad is a bit offset to the left and sometimes bothers me a bit.

It's truly amazing how bad some of the keyboards and touchpads out there are. I honestly believe that about half the reason people love MacBooks so much is the truly excellent keyboards and touchpads.

Honestly, there's no good reason for a computer to have anything other than a truly excellent keyboard and touchpad in 2015. But many do.

I have a Macbook Pro. The Mister has some HP thing (I think) from work. Being so used to the Macbook, when I use his laptop, the entire keyboard and touchpad feel canted to the left, and so I can't type on it worth a damn.

My next laptop will also be a Macbook Pro. As well as his. Soon!

Good keyboard & backlit keys are a must on my list.

It's a tremendously helpful feature for me, because I frequently use my computer in dim lighting.

I guess it depends on where the computer is used.

I'm a MacBook fan so when I wanted a new Winders machine, the Dell Inspiron 7437 was the only choice for me. It's like my MacBook Pro with Windows on it. When my cat tangled up in the cord and muffed up the plug, eight screws took the bottom plate off and everything is easily accessible. The charger plug isn't soldered on the motherboard like some cheaper models. I took it out and straightened the contacts and back in business. If it had a mag safe plug like my MacBook, I'd call the Dell perfect. I don't use the backlit keyboard. Been typing for years so I just find the brail on the effin' j keys and commence typing. The Keyboard centered on the laptop is a must for me. I upgraded to Winders 10 with no issues. If it poops out prematurely, my 8 year old MacBook still runs like a champ.

IMO the touchpad is the single biggest - but most underrated - differentiator for Mac laptops. Once you "become one" with it, nothing else will do.

The touchpad and the keyboard are the interface between human and machine.

Nobody does notebooks as well as Apple

Mac touchpad is great. Keys are responsive, but I like the curve on keys so you can center your fingers. Macs do not have this. I also don't like the sharp corners where I rest my wrist.

I bought my laptop to use as a desktop since it was cheaper than any desktop with equivalent specs by a good margin and portable. It gets plugged into a 32" LCD and a USB expander with keyboard and mouse so I do not care about any of those things. I would like an SSD and have a 480G sitting here I could put in but the cheap laptops are not so upgradeable in that area.

Thinkpads went to backlit keys a couple of years ago. It's ok, but I much preferred the old solution which was a small light in the top edge of the screen bezel that shined down on the keyboard.

I like that solution too but it's more intrusive for sleeping bedmates.

Source: The Mister is a workaholic and I'm usually the sleeping bedmate (who hates sleep masks). Sometimes I'll hand him my Macbook because even though his laptop has backlit keys, the *chukka chukka* of the keys is quieter.

The old solution sounds good also. I've never had a computer with it, so don't know which I'd like better.

The power did go out at work a few weeks back, but I just sat in the hall by the window since I couldn't see any of my papers anyway. :)
