My buddy lost his job about 6-7 months ago. He then started to take classes to finish up in school since he doesn't have a job. Now he is in a rut because he has no income and cant afford college. They are not offering him financial aid and loans is out of the question for him since he doesn't know when he will be able to finish up. He was thinking about joining the Army. Is 27 to old to join the army and what would limit him if he joins at 27? What are the pros and cons on this? Advice would be greatly appreciated. :wavey:

I believe the last I heard was the cut-off for the Army was shipping out to boot camp before your 42nd birthday.

Why can't he get financial aid? They offer it for everything these days. 27 isn't to old but I wouldn't give up on college if I already started.

Back in 2005 when I was out of work I remember looking at a military job and in the qualifications it stated nobody over 35 should apply and this was just for an office position.

Have him go online to fafsa.gov One application for federal student aid. I'm 27 and attend college. I get the full loan amount and a lot in grants. It's definitely worth the 5-10 minutes to fill out.

He wanted to know if certain mos was not available to him being 27. Also is it normal to see 27-37 year olds joining?

It was on the news tonight that the Army are now looking for those with a degree and 41 or under for OCS.

    Interesting.

Same incentive for them raising the enlistment age. Volunteers are down.

You're in CA...Tell him to go with the coast guard. He should be able to stay in CA and the cutoff age is 27 without a degree if im not mistaken.

Expect to have about one year wait until basic training and he'll need written references to join. The Coast Guard is not exactly easy to get into, nor are they likely to keep him in California.

No, not if a person is in decent physical shape.

I went in the USMC when I was 17 but didn't didn't go to the Army flight school until years later when I was 26.
Looking back, 26-27 is pretty young still.

the age limit is 41 now. as long as you ship out to basic training before your 42nd birthday, you are good. i went through basic training recently, and i had several battle buddies in their early 30s going through it with me, and they graduated with me. the drill seargents will berrate you, and they will be about the same age as you, but they actually like to see older people going through the army.

I'm a Marine, but I work with the Army. There is an Army PFC in my unit who is 42 years old, joined 2 years ago. He was a truck driver for Bud, retired there, then joined the Army to support his 16 year old daughter. Like me, he's also an infantryman.
