I know, I know, I've posted this photo before, but both my G17Gen5 & G19Gen5 both came with 6.1mm rear sights. I've got several spare Glock sights in my tool box and put on a couple of 6.5mm Ameriglo-brand plain steel rear sights as I found the 6.1mm rear sights hitting too low for my liking. (Right now, I'm using Glock luminescent front sights on those guns.)

On other Glocks, with whatever ammo I was using at the time, I've often put a lower rear sight on to adjust for POI/POA, usually on my G30 guns, however.

It is very bizarre.

So Ameriglo uses a fixed rear sight height and adjusts the front sight height (reverse of what Glock does).

They list the following:
  • Rear U-notch (all): .165" wide
  • Front sights: .140" wide (G42,43 is .125" Wide)
  • Glock® 9mm/.40 S&W/.357 SIG front: .180" high
  • Glock® 10mm/.45 ACP front: .165" high
  • Glock® 42/43 front: .190" high
  • Gen5 sights fit all models of Glock Gen5 pistols ONLY (front: .200" high)
So FWIW, for Gen 5 they are doing a higher front sight, which is similar to the Glock rear lower sight height.

There is the possibility that the marksman barrel and Gen 5 slide require that adjustment? And Gen 1-4 sight heights don’t apply. I guess.

I might have to bench shoot the G19x to sort it out.

That explains some of my frustration at the range the other day.
:drowning:

Was going to leave it unmolested, in case of resale. But who am I kidding, I’m never going to sell it.

:exercise:

I have a spare set of agent sights that are going on as soon as I get home from work....
Just aim at the neck. :)

I swapped my Trijicons I had on my G22.3, I'll go to the range tomorrow and see what happens. Sucks though I thought the Glock night sights would be gtg and I wouldn't have to buy anything else for it.

On my G42 and G43, the Glock Night Sights are regulated perfectly POI=top of the blade, at least at the ranges I use them.

If you take one of your G17's, install a 6.1mm rear sight and go shoot it, you will know right away the difference between POI/POA and what some call "covered hold" or "combat hold". ;)

I am not sure where it came from.
I see. -JCN-'s illustrations helped. In 37 years as a pistol instructor, among lots of other things, I've never seen that taught in the real world. I don't expect to start teaching it...ever.

I think you may be misunderstanding it. We don’t WANT to use a “combat sight picture,” but if that’s where the factory sights are, then that’s what you have to do.

How can you not teach it if that’s the way the student’s pistol sights?

I prefer a Type II sight picture, but I prefer to hit my target...

Here’s a brain teaser for you.

A G31 uses a 6.9mm rear sight. But a G22 uses a 6.5mm rear sight.

So what happens when you put a G31 conversion barrel into a G22 and don’t change the sights...

Hint, the POI changes and you better change your sight picture if you want to hit where you want to hit....

One size does not fit all. IMHO, the best instructors are open minded!

Hmm. Interesting. I was very curious so I took one my laser alignment tools and checked my CZ Shadow 2, the gun that is the most accurate POA/POI for me.

Laser was dead on.

Then I took my G19x and did the same thing (with the 6.1mm rear sight).

Laser was dead on.

Something is going on here. I need more range time with the 19x to test some things, but am going to leave the stock night sights on for now.

Yes, I know that laser alignment and actual POI can be different (or else G31 / G22 would use the same sight heights).

But I’m in need of a little more learning to understand what’s going on...

My working assumption is that the Gen 5 sight heights play by different rules than the Gen 1-4 guns...

I'm not sure how having a pistol that own't hit point of aim has anything to do with that I said. I was talking about a deliberate choice to use the dots on the sights and to sight your gun so that the POI is the center of the dot, rather than the center of the top edge, as it came from the factory.

If there is some problem that prevents your gun from hitting where the top center of the front sight is, that a completely different problem, unrelated to my question about some new fashion in tactical sight pictures. Time to adjust your sights (all sights can be adjusted).

This is exactly what we are talking about. Some guns FROM THE FACTORY are set up with sight height stagger so that if you use your preferred Type II hold, you’ll be shooting low.

Sure, you can tell a new student that you prefer a Type II sight picture and why. But if their sight stagger is set for a Type III sight picture, then what are you going to tell the student?

Buy new sights? Especially when the manufacturer purposely set them up to be a Type III?

Read what we are talking about in this thread. We are talking about short rear sights that for some, are associated with lower than usual POI when using their normal Type II hold.

Follow up: I am dumb.

I was in a rush to get to the range and home again with the G19X the first time I went that I didn't realize I didn't put my normal medium backstrap on. I think that was the issue with my shooting mechanics that day, not the sights.

I was under that working hypothesis when I laser checked the bore and found that the sights were pretty spot on.

It does seem more like a combat sight picture rather than a half-and-half, but still was easily hitting 8" steel at 50 feet in the limited shooting I was able to do this weekend. So FWIW, it does seem like the 6.1 is a reasonable Gen 5 rear sight.

Also FYI for people, Sig Sauer uses that sight picture on their firearms.

My SIG SAUER pistol is not accurate. Why? What should I do?
All SIG SAUER production duty/combat pistols are set up to use a “combat” sight picture. This is where the front sight completely covers the bullseye of the target. Using a six o’clock (“pumpkin on a post”) or center mass (“half’n’half”) sight picture will result in low impact. SIG SAUER, Inc sights in all non-sporting and non-target pistols for 2.5 inch groupings @ 15 yards. If you are still having trouble please contact Customer Service for further help and instruction. Please have your serial number ready. There are also very helpful free Internet sites that cover pistol group analysis.
