I found this 1986 American Rifleman while cleaning out the garage. Interesting info from the day and was one of the first articles to debunk the myth that Glocks could pass through metal detectors.
Looking at the vintage ads is cool as well! [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

Excellent article. Thx for sharing. The late 80's and early 90's the dreaded media sure despised this new plastic pistol that you could smuggle onto airplanes because it couldn't be detected on an x-ray machine. It had to be true since I read it in TIME or Newsweek magazine........

I found the author to have done a great job describing in detail how the pistol functions. Not all, but many articles I read today don't go into these details and discuss attributes such as looks, get busy showing groupings with different types of ammo, etc. I just really appreciate how described the inner workings of their sample G17.

    Yes they have.
I remember reading that article way back then.
And I remember saying to myself I don't care, I'll never have one of those 9mm plastic pistols.
My 1911 45 is all the pistol I need.
Well I ate those words, or tried to forget them. Lol
Now I still have one 1911, and a whole bunch of Glocks.
My every day carry is a G-23, and I couldn't tell you when I carried a 1911 last, I don't even have a holster for one.

It amazes me at how little the price has increased.

Thanks for sharing! What a fun, historic read!

But isn't it interesting that we now read that the pistol should be carried empty? How things change! Clearly they were being very cautious regarding how aggressively they positioned the new, bizarre trigger approach to avoid startling people.

    Thanks again for sharing!

I had that copy of American Rifleman.

I found this interesting; Glock’s manual stresses the point that the pistol ordinarily should be carried “empty, with the trigger rearward except when you intend to shoot.”

    Thank you for sharing.

Wait, wait, wait...Hold on a sec! The qualifier here, I believe (and my wife tells me I'm wrong all the time), that statement was geared toward the folks loading their pistols and putting them back into the tupperware box with the restrictive piece that went through the trigger guard causing the trigger to be in the "fired" position. When folks put their loaded/chambered pistol into the box and pushed it down ===> KABOOM!

I have carried loaded/chambered Glocks for more than 27 years with no dang firings unless I pulled the trigger.

But I agree with your comments. The master gun craftsman also had master marketeers and were really trying to calm any worries on the part of those use to having a manual safety.

Standard Operating Procedures in most of the world's Armies is carrying sidearms chamber empty.

Veterans know the drill but civilians do not understand.

But how many lieutenants in the Austrian Army can say the same thing? My son in law was a private in the Austrian Army, they have mandatory military service, he never touched a G17 even in boot camp.

That's really cool. I still remembers the idiots in the media claiming that it wouldn't set off metal detectors. The left wing fake news morons were just as ignorant and uninformed then as they are today. Journalists have never been our best and brightest.
