93F27CD0-F73D-4C68-8772-8F6807E738EA.jpeg This just came in the mail today and wanted to share with you all. It's the Oct '84 issue of Soldier of Fortune magazine and, to my knowledge, was the first American write-up of Glock pistols. Peter Kokalis introduces it as "Plastic Perfection."
According to Paul Barrett's "Glock: Rise of America's Gun" the article helped stoke demand for the pistol in the US well before they could even be imported.
The pics in the spread are all of an early duo tone gen 1, but I can't make out the serial number.
Here is a link to the article if you're curious to read it: https://www.remtek.com/arms/glock/model/9/17/index.htm

OP - Quite an interesting trip down memory lane with that article. Hard to believe the Glock pistol was ever that misunderstood regarding X-ray machine at airports, etc. Thanks for sharing.

Good article. What really hyped the pistol, though, wasn’t this, but was the MSM reaction to it. “Plastic pistol that can pass through airport security! Horrors!”

Made me want to go on eBay and buy some back issues of Soldier of Fortune, from back when I was 12 or 13 and used to read it.

I think the writer of that article had one of the Gen1 19s that then got passed on to his grandson.

If you thought your issue took a long time to finally arrive you should see the queue for the USPS complaint department....

I remember that issue. I was still buying the magazine back then, having started with buying the very first issue when it premiered. At some point I ended up either tossing them or trading them to a local Used book store when I took in enough of my older books and magazines to fill the bed of my Toyota PU twice. I needed room in all of my bookcases for the newer stuff.

Good post, thanks for sharing. I remember reading "a few" SoF magazines over the years. Then in 1995 I went down to Las Vegas with 3 other guys from my P.D. to shoot in the SOF 3 Gun Tactical Match.

The match was a blast as was the convention, we also had some fun at the roulette wheel every night. Good memories.

Yep! I was a early subscriber to SOF, and remember that article from Kokalis as well. I decided then that I would get a Glock when they became available. And sometime after that, I did. I worked in a pawn shop at the time, and we sold lots of firearms. The Distributor who we bought Firearms through said he had one of those new plastic pistols and I told him to send it. It arrived and I did the 4473, and took it home. Figured out how to get it apart, I was amazed at the Engineering of the 17, and the love affair was on. It did take awhile for me to learn the trigger, but I did, and have owned mostly Glocks ever since. I believe I was the 1st person in this area to own a Glock back then.
I wish I still had it. Oh well...:D

Would b fun to know the SN of that gun.

Wonder if they ever engraved the SN in the frame as the gun was not made w a frame SN.
