I'm looking for some ammo for my new 18.5" 870P that is on its way to my FFL dealer, I'm looking for 00 buck and slugs to pattern and test, I already have Federal LE127 RS (slugs) and LE133 00 (00 buck) are these good choices? what are some other really popular and recommended shells? is there a gold dot 124+p equivalent in 12 gauge in terms of popularity? thanks

LE133? Are you sure? How does it differ from LE127 and LE132? The LE127 is full power 00 and the LE132 is low recoil 00.

The Federal with flight control wad is probably what you are looking for in terms of 12 gauge buck.

Interesting. It looks the same as the LE132 but only 8 pellets instead of 9. Exact same quoted velocity, even.

I wonder if they wanted to reduce the recoil even further...?

I use the Fed H132 Powershok OO (reduced recoil) 9 pellet stuff....it patterns about a foot at 25yrds, great stuff, not very expensive.

In slugs, Brenneke KOs are my favorite, their Classics hold 4" for five shots at 100yrds from my rifle sighted 20" 870.

The Federal Flite-control buck loads are AMAZING for a patrol shotgun. They increase the DRT range of the 12g patrol shotgun 10-15yds, which is huge if you are a patrol cop forced to carry buck in your only long gun like me.

However, for in the house I keep my HD shotgun loaded with remington #4 27 pellet buck. At 8-10yds inside the house I like the patterns to have a little spread and a high pellet count. You aren't gonna shoot farther than in my house. At 10 yds the 27 pellet #4 load is devastating.

The more expensive rounds are just not necessary IMO for a HD shotgun.

As far as slugs go, I would check out the new PDX1 round the Winchester has.

It comes with a 1oz. slug + three 00 buckshot balls.

As far as buckshot goes? You cannot go wrong with any Federal or Remington full power or reduced recoil loads.

I don't get the advantage of the PDX1. It has the liability of a slug: Massive penetration. It has the liability of buckshot: Spread/Errant pellets. Why not pick the one that suits your use best and go with it, possibly with the other on a side saddle?

I tend to think that one large wound and several smaller wounds would be better at stopping a person than either one slug or many buckshot. IMO of course from seeing several people shot with both buckshot and slugs.

Penetration could be a concern but with the Centurion it is a 65 caliber ball and 6 #1 buckshot. For shooting at vehicles or deer hunting a slug would be better and just buckshot would be very, very good against humans but a combo might be better IMO.

And Nobel Law Enforcement Shotgun ammo has two 70 Caliber balls in a 12 gauge load. That might be worth looking into. Balls are good at relatively close range but for distance a slug is much more accurate!

I've read for the past couple of years that #1 buckshot is overall "best" load currently going for 12 gauge home defense.

Check the on-line ammo dealers for clearance sales. Normally MidwayUSA prices ammo higher than competitors but last year I picked up a bunch of Sellier & Bellot #1 buckshot 10-round packs at MidwayUSA for a bit less than $4/pack. That's a hell of a deal in my book. I should have bought more than I did.

That's what they say, but manufacturers spend a lot more time and money on their 00. Premium #1 is, well, I'd say hard to find but I haven't found any yet.

You can try cheaperthandirt.com. They had #1 buck in several different brands earlier this week. Someone posted about a site called ammoseek.com that had all kinds of ammo. Won't hurt to check it out.

I've only ever seen the cheap sellier and bellot.

Nobody makes 'premium' 12 gauge #1 buck on the level of Federal with flight control or hornady with versa tite wad

I'd say a minimum of number 4 buck, and anything else is just icing on the cake. I keep it classic and simple with 00 buck in an 18.5 inch mossberg 500. Although I also have 7/8 oz slugs clocking in @ 1800 fps I wouldn't hesitate to use either. I could only imagine the devastation a .70 caliber 7/8 ounce slug @ 1800 fps would do with a well placed center of mass shot. I know there are certain criminals who can be bullet sponges, but it's hard to believe anymore than 1 or two or those would be necessary to stop someone.

I don't worry about "premium" shotgun shells like I do with my duty caliber pistol ammo.

My thinking is that #1 Sellier & Bellot or #4 Remington buckshot from my smooth bore 18.5" shotgun at home defense range may not give me an optimum spread but the spread it does give will surely create a bad hair day for whatever intruder is on the receiving end.

This isn't to say that "pray and spray" is the technique because I know better; it's to say that self-defense shotgun groupings at close range will surely accommodate a less-than-optimum pellet spread as long as the load is properly aimed.

When using a handgun the "premium" aspect comes much more critically important in my opinion, as long as it's not carried to an extreme.

I bought some of these Hexolit32 slugs although I haven't had a chance to test them yet. Appear to be wicked and very effective.
