First, no such thing as price gouging in non-emergency conditions or non-essential items (food, water, shelter)
Second, you're asking about market price. You'll find out that at the gun show. The one I was at last weekend had lots of ammo at market prices, just like online but actually there and available. Ammo will fetch whatever people are willing to pay at their location
I sold 1,000 rounds of 9MM HP today for $800 - $40 a box.
It is some stuff I had on hand since 2007 - paid $18 a box for it and at the time thought that was insane - the sad part was it really wasn't the ammo I wanted - I just got it because it was still available and less that some other 9MM ammo that was available.
I also sold 200 rounds of 165 grain 40S&W - I decided to go all 180 grain and this stuff has been in the back of the closet since 2006. The outside of the boxes were a little ragged - and they were marked 07/2006 $14.99 - I was only able to get $35 a box.
I also sold an M&P40 - tried to sell it a couple years ago for $250 and the best offer I got was $150 - I got tired of carrying it to the gun show - so I stuck it back in the safe -
I took it with me today and only got 20 feet into the show before a guy ask me about it - I wanted $500 - he said how about $400? I said no I need $500 - he said how about $450? I said no I need $500 - he said OK I will give you $500 but I am paying you in $20 bills!
I also sold some 1911 parts (I no longer own a 1911) an X-grip for a G26 I no longer own a G26. I found this stuff while looking for something else.
I sorted through my AK mags - I had 46 - so I sold 24 of them for $10 each - I know I should have ask a little more - but I didn't want to mess with it - sold 10 to one guy and 14 to another.
$1,700 something in total - I walked the show with a pocket full of cash that was just burning a hold in my pocket and could not find one gun I wanted. All I bought was a $5 bore light - I turned mine on last week and it would not turn off - so I figured I could afford a new one!
The idea of a "market" price is a little strange at the show I went to today.
I wanted to check out 40 S&W prices before I priced mine - I noticed - two ammo sellers directly across an aisle - less than 10 feet apart -
One was selling 180 grain Winchester white box $85 for 50 rounds - the other was selling the exact same ammo for $30.
What is the market price?
I also saw a lot of 230 grain FMJ 45 ACP for $24 a box (50) but other sellers wanted $60 and even $75 a box. various brands.
I also saw a stack of Federal 115 grain 9MM FMJ - full case only - $985 + tax, when I first noticed it there must have been 20 cases - later in the day when I went back after lunch he only had 3 or 4 left. Yet other places were selling 9MM FMJ for $18 a box.
People are maybe lazy or dumb or so rich they don't care how much they spend.
I also saw a guy selling 2 AK47 under folders - they looked pretty nice - as I walked up I thought I heard him say he wanted $500 each for them - and even though I don't need another AK I was seriously thinking I was going to be buying both of them!
But I had misunderstood - the guy said he wanted $5 THOUSAND EACH for them -
I am pretty sure he carried them back home - but I wouldn't bet money on it.
I was happy to find buyers willing to pay my asking prices - but really disappointed at the selection of guns for sale.
A few of the dealers that have always been at the show with tables full of guns and storage boxes full of guns to resupply had noticeably fewer guns on hand.
I like going to gun shows so I can compare several guns I am interest in before I decide - the show yesterday would not have been worth the price of admission to look at empty tables.
I wouldn’t sell any Ammo right now. If I did it would be $700 per 1000 rounds of the cheapest 9mm FMJ. That’s what it’s going for on GB which is where I’d sell it.
I recently sold some...not sure how I did.
250rd bulk box of Speer 124gr GDHP +P reclassified ammo: $180
850rds Federal American Eagle 115gr FMJ: $340
The latter was via gunbroker, and I think I got hosed for not springing for any of the "extras" to make mine a featured listing. It was so burried in their system, that even knowing exactly what to look for, I had a hard time pulling up my listing in a search.
1000rd cases of 115gr FMJ are going on gunbroker for $500-$600 + shipping.
I still have another 1500rds of 147gr FMJ factory ammo I'd like to sell. The question is, will prices go higher, or have they already peaked?

Well, I ended up posting again to the local trader web site. Last time, I posted the 147gr FMJ asking $26/box and got few replies over weeks, none willing to pay anywhere near the asking price.
This time, I asked $25/box with a discount to $23.33 if someone bought all 1500 rounds. It was like throwing chum into a feeding frenzy. I’ve got a long line of buyers wanting to meet to buy it all.
I guess people are really scared of what Biden/Harris will do.
While cleaning out a cabinet, I found some more old factory ammo, so I guess I’ll be doing this one more time.
Fair price is what you can get Imo. There is a price to friends & a price to joe blow. Though I probably wouldnt be selling anything right now, who knows where all this BS goes.
It isn't really necessary to spend crazy money on ammo right now, but it is good for sellers that people will do so.
I've gotten some reasonable deals (for the times) just by signing up for alerts. I don't really need anything but .380 and 5.56, but I put some alerts out on 9mm and found some Fiochhi for $13.99 a box. A little high, but I grabbed some so I could get out and do some shooting with my brothers-in-law. I'm a saver and it was really causing me pain to dip into my stash to go shoot.
I thought I was lucky finding $8/box of 100 Herter's .22 lr at Bass Pro. Too finicky for my AR-style .22 lr rifle that shoots everything else with little or no problems. I bought 500 rounds and will shoot the remaining 300 rounds before blowing up my better ammo. Bottom line is that I'm certain my Ruger Mark II will flawlessly eliminate whatever I have left.

I have done the same. I have scored quite a few things at normal or very close to normal prices recently by getting on notification lists at the major reloading and ammo online retailers. I have also been late to check my emails a few times and missed out when things sold out within minutes of the notifications going out.
I just shelled out $12/box of 100 for each of the two boxes (the limit) of Mini-Mag and Remington Viper I was lucky to find in a small town gun shop. I normally would have passed but I am putting my new rifle through its break-in and the cheap Herter's I bought at Bass Pro chokes up way too much. All the other bulk ammos (Federal, Golden Bullet, CCI, etc...) work pretty well but none of it is available. My goal is to use the cheap ammo for break-in while replacing it if I can find it, to be on the safe side during this ammo crunch. I don't know how the Viper will perform but Mini-Mag is the best ammo of any I've shot so far. Flawless, in fact.

This is and has been the best and smartest way to monitor ammo prices and availability. The lazy way way is to go on gun forums and get others to do the work.
One of our local farm stores received a small shipment of ammo this week. Blazer Brass 9mm 147 gr was going for $11.99/box of 50. Blazer aluminum 45 ACP was $19.99. Those prices are pretty decent considering the current situation. The limit was 2 boxes per caliber.
