If you prefer the 9mm - more power to you! For me I prefer the 45ACP

Here are a few of the reasons why I prefer the 45ACP:

  1. I enjoy shooting the 45ACP more than 9mm or 40 S&W
  2. I am a better shot with 45ACP (more accurate, at least just as quick follow up shots, etc.) than I am with 9mm or 40 S&W
  3. By the numbers - I am convinced the 45ACP out performs the 9mm as a defensive round.
  4. Commiefornia limits us to 10 rounds so might as well carry a 45ACP. (Not really a factor as I have legal standard cap mags for almost all my guns and carry 13 round G21 spare mags when carrying my G30S.)
  5. I used to carry my Kahr CW9 far more often than my Glocks simply due to its size. I was comfortable with 7+1 of quality +P 9mm HP. ...but I now have a Kahr P45 which is just ever so slightly larger, weights 2.8 ounces more and standard mags are 6+1 but Kahr makes a factory 7 round mag... so I carry both 7+1. Here in Commiefornia we have to qualify with our carry guns every 24 months: to my surprise I scored better with the Kahr P45 than I did with my Glock 30S, Glock 41 or Kahr CW9!
  6. If modern bullet design improvements now makes the 9mm the equal to what 45ACP used to be then modern 45ACP bullets must have improved just as much... still giving the edge to the 45ACP!
  7. The 45ACP is fat and slow... just like me! :p

I agree. When I posted that Underwood ammo ad for the .40 S&W offering, it was in response to the guy who said that there is little difference between 9/.40/.45 as they all get around 400 ft/lb of energy. The .40 is capable of a lot more than the 9mm, and the .45 is capable of even more still. The 9mm is simply not in the same league.

I do prefer .40 over .45 due to being able to get more rounds in a smaller frame. Still, I spent most of my adult life carrying .45’s and hold them in very high regard. I kinda see my .40 as a pistol that comes really close to matching the performance of a .357 Magnum, while firing a larger diameter/heavier projectile, and offering more than double the capacity of a revolver, all in a gun no bigger than a 9mm.

I never thought I would finally see a thread on this important yet unexplored topic.

BTW....some experienced people believe there is hardly a dime’s worth of difference between 9mm, .45 acp, .38 Spl, AND yes .380.(Modern defensive ammo and light clothing-there are laws of physics.)
On a slightly elevated tier are 10mm, .357 Sig and .357 mag.
More important than caliber are: where an assailant is hit and; 2. How many times.
So...what you can hit with first and repeatedly is key.
For some that’s a Glock 17/19.
For others it’s a 9mm or (dare I say it) a .38 Super out of a 1911 platform.
My thoughts....
