Rant about Taurus Spectrum and Taurus Non-Responce

I recently got a new Taurus Spectrum from Bud's for $140. I carry a S&W Bodyguard .380 and thought that the Spectrum would make a good replacement or backup as it's lighter and recently received a very good review in the American Rifleman; my bad!

Disassembled it to see if it needs lubing, was fairly clean and lightly oiled. Managed to put a mild kink in the recoil spring when reassembling, was a red flag that I should have noticed. Contacted Taurus via their website and wanted to know how to buy a couple of extra springs. They never responded to me (another red flag).

Tried to dry fire it with dummies and had several jams (red flag #3). Took it to the range and got multiple misfeeds and jams; managed to get 9 shots before completely giving up. Sent a repair request to Taurus via their website. Been two days, no response from them. Am now at red flag #4. Also, their warranty fine print states that I have to ship it to them on my nickel. This is at least $50 based on a recent transfer to an FFL in Ohio.

I'm going to see if one of my trap buddies or the gun shop where I did the transfer will buy this POS for $50. Now I understand why Taurus has a lousy reputation. They work hard to earn it.

I've bought many new guns in the past. Over time have had to return a S&W 62, Ruger Bisley, and a SCCY SC-2 for repairs. All have had shipping paid for by the manufacturer; not so with Taurus. Lesson learned, never deal with them again.

Added update in reply #31.

Just my experience. Bought a 856 UL. Cylinder binding. Sent to Taurus. Repaired and sent back in 2 weeks. Trouble free since.

I've had two; a Millennium Pro 45 and a Public Defender. One of the mags included with the Millennium was a 40 S&W mag, stamped as a 45 ACP, The dealer had several of the 45s so he swapped it out. That one and the Public Defender ran OK, but I swapped them both before 200 rounds had gone down their barrels. I don't trust the brand for durability or customer support.

I view Taurus handguns much like those 7-10 dollar knives you see in truck stops and stab & grabs. Yes, it's a knife. Woohoo, 10 bucks- cheap! You can fold it up, put it in your pocket and pretend like you're carrying a real knife. Cut string and open envelopes to your heat's content- but one of these days you're going to need a real knife and that SOB will break, fold over on your fingers and pinch them if it ain't sharp enough to cut them.

Dude, just walk on buy. 50 bucks will buy a decent knife and you'll get there quicker if you don't pizz away 10 bucks on a junker.

Going thru the same thing. Is moving forward to my satisfaction but slowlyy due to their relocation from FL to GA

Call them again. Expect 20 minutes of hold time. Be polite and factual. Don't come across pissed or butt hurt

Ask to speak with Tammy and work the conversation toward a Taurus paid return trip. State it will restore your faith if they can fix the gun at their expense. It's crazy they're charging $50 given price point of most Taurus guns

You're throwing in the towel too soon imo

You have to call them to set up a repair with them. I recently send a revolver back. I was on hold for about 10 minutes on the phone, not to bad. Great help over the phone. I was sent a free shipping fedex label. I believe the shipping is free within 90 days of purchase on returns. They are saying up to 12 weeks turn around. I sent mine in late December. Hope to see it back in Feb.

I hadn't bought a Taurus since the 80's and still have and shoot the one's I bought then, BUT I shied away from their stuff when I began seeing all the negatives on their 9MM's. I took a chance on their TX22 and had two bad magazines. Taurus sent me a FEDEX sticker and 10 day's later I was shooting the TX trouble free for 2,000 Rounds. I bought a second one have 700 rounds through that one. I have had one FTF when a CCI HP caught the top of the chamber on the one. That's it. I saw the Spectrum and thought it was neat looking but I already had a LCP II so I passed it up. I'm so glad I did. When I saw them selling for $119.00 I thought thank you Ruger that I bought the LCP first. Pure trash, that Spectrum. I don't know why your experience with the Taurus CS was so bad. Like I said, very polite and fixed me right up. Taurus is still a toss up, apparently, but I don't have a problem with speaking up for the TX22. Good luck, and maybe check their CS again. These all work. Firearm Gun Trigger Airsoft gun Air gun

Sorry to hear. Like others are saying, it is a Taurus. Learn from it and never buy another.

This is slightly unfair, since you have had no direct contact nor response with taurus. Like my kid texting me, but not confirming that I got the message. To be fair, I do have to point out that you (OP) produced the "kink in the recoil spring" on the first clean and lube, then tried firing it with the kinked spring. Probably if the OP kinked the recoil spring in the Shield, it may not work either.

People like to bully up on Taurus. But I've had several, and no problems with the ones I've owned. I did trade up because it was to my $$ advantage to do so. I still have a PT1911.

I think this rant is just whining for sympathy, and knee jerk response from the taurus bush beaters-- which you are getting.

Most warranties are written as "defects in parts or workmanship", not necessarily everything that happens -- they are being nice if they fix anything for outside of that.

We actually have a lot of Taurus apologists here, but they usually run for cover instead of posting in threads like this.
Really? I seems that there are some posters in the thread with positive comments about Taurus. And of course folks don't see every single thread that pops up at the same time. Since you have so many posts I would think you would have understood that?

Be that as it may, what I've noted moreso than your inaccurate observation is that when someone posts a positive thread, the Taurus-haters, like yourself, feel the need to come in a crap on the thread. Like their afraid someone is going to go out an buy a Taurus based on the thread and also have a positive experience. You could almost set your watch by it.

Anyhoo, in regards to the OP. First, sorry he's having issues. However the Taurus-haters kinda glossed over one little tidbit...

Managed to put a mild kink in the recoil spring when reassembling
Could have been a bad spring, anything is possible I suppose. But sounds more like a user-induced problem and then the gun got blamed. Now, having said that, I've never had to use Taurus CS because all of my Taurus pistols, with one minor exception, were flawless. So if Taurus charges for returns, shame on them. However, you'll notice my comment in contrast with the OP. He has/had a sample size of one. I have a sample size of maybe 20ish over a period of 30 years. He had an issue with a recent sample size of one (that he likely caused himself). I had a minor, easily resolved issue with one out of 20+ over a period of 30 years and a LOT of rounds fired down range through all of them. And I've stated this before in other threads. And yet the Taurus-haters never seem to acknowledge mine or all the other positive reviews. Well, why would they since it goes against their parrot-like viewpoint. This is where you see the bias come out from the Taurus-hate crowd. You know, the ones that never even held the gun in question in their hands yet they feel like they are qualified experts enough to comment. So they come out wagging their tongues anytime a poster has an issue with their Taurus (but are oddly absent when members have issues with other manufacturers) yet gloss over all the MANY posters that have threads (or post positive reviews in threads) about Taurus. Or worse yet, crap in those positive review threads. So honestly, as I've said in the past, your opinions are pretty worthless because you don't have the experience with the pistol(s) in question and have a built in bias. And looking at a pistol in a picture doesn't qualify you.

Yeah well, there are far too many good deals right now on quality mainstream firearms to waste time and money on a Taurus.

What you said: :laughabove:

What I reading: "I'm new to guns but I read about them on the internet and I asked some professional security guys at the mall and they recommended Taurus; now I can't believe a leading handgun manufacturer is letting me down. I could have had a Hi Point for the same price!!!"

OP update as of 1/23/20 – As suggested by several folks, finally contacted Taurus Customer Service via telephone; took two tries, finally spoke to a live rep after a 23 minute hold. They emailed me a FedEx label, so no shipping cost. Had my info in the system, but apparently only deal when pinged with phone calls. Anyhow, will post and update when the saga is finished.

Bren - Please read again what I originally posted (meant to type S&W model 61, not 62). Bought it new in 1971. Your reading comprehension could probably use some improvement. I'm not new to guns.

So.... they are going to fix your gun (for free) until you MAYBE break it again with the very difficult uncaptured recoil spring install--, but you started a topic perhaps? prematurely, and this topic will still be jumped on by every Taurus bully, and Taurus regurgitator.

May I ask why you chose a Taurus as the backup to your SHIELD?

Was the Taurus bully thing intentional?
And the big question about why he chose a Taurus as a backup gun is quite a question. Why does anyone choose a Taurus? I can guess. If all of the bullets in the shield fail to stop the attacker, you might need something to throw at the attacker. And what better gun to toss than a Taurus?

I have a Spectrum. It is a great size, but has a not so smooth trigger. However, it seems to go bang without too much problem. My next purchase may be a TX22, as they seem very reliable for a .22 semi-auto. I shoot a lot of .22 rounds out of several different pistols. They are exclusively range toys versus self defense guns. A rant per say, but I would not shy away from the TX22.

Then don’t. Other folks feel differently and get a solid pistol at a great price and are well satisfied.
