If you buy guns in December but pick up in January - which year can you claim?

I got an OK bonus. Not great but OK and enough to buy a few handguns for myself. The guns are already paid for and waiting at the local gun shop for me to come home and pick them up. Alas, I won't be home until late January. Should I consider them to be 2017 purchases or 2018 purchases?

First World problems, I know.

How can they tell you how many guns you can buy in a years time. I would have been in serious trouble on a few different occasions.

I know when VA had a one gun a month law it was when you took posession. So I could pay for five guns at once and then pick one up each month.
By the way, nice looking horse you have there.

Do you get a tax deduction for them?

Otherwise, WTF?

You can't buy the gun until you pass the NICS check or your CCW is used for the 4473. That would be the buy/transfer date. If you elect to leave the gun with the FFL and come back you would have to compete Section C of the 4473, given that you competed the form initiall and take possession on that date.
