Well, my research says that the Norma load was a 200 gn bullet with abt. 1300 fps. I just couldn't find out the powder used. I wouldn't call 200gn@1300fps mild ;-)
Interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing. I wonder if age of the ammo had anything to do with it? But I can also say, Glock barrels are the slowest of any of my barrels in 10mm. Every aftermarket barrel I have shoots faster than a stock Glock barrel.
I think not.
Intuitive assumption is that age degrades powder burn rate, thus lowers pressures and lowers velocities. That isn't always the case. Some powders are resilient to degradation if kept moisture free. Other powders may degrade yielding higher burn rates and higher pressures.
Example: I have half a box of Union Metallic Cartridge .35 Remington 200 gr passed down from my grandfather (I'm 75); the primers have a "U" stamped on them. The best I can determine is that the last year UMC (Later to become Remington) placed a "U" on the primer was 1916. I fired several through a ProChrono at 2140 fps. Reloading the best load of 41gr LeverEvolution Hornady FTX 200 grain through the ProChrono was 2142fps ... same Remington Model 8 .35 cal. Back to the Future,eh?
FWIW, I haven't been able to reach the 'magical' 1250 fps with a 200 grain bullet out of a OEM G40 barrel ... 1228 fps is max velocity with a Hornady XTP 200 gr without doing something outside my 'comfort zone'.
I was early into the 10mm back when Norma loaded for it. My chrono results were right at 1200fps from my then new Delta. The 170gr were closer to 1250fps. So no 1400fps loads ever.
