I have a G20.4 and a G30.4. Kicking around using the 30 as a summer carry, and adding a 21 as a winter carry. OR, maybe using the 20 for winter carry and getting a 29 for summer carry. What say you?
Please, only discuss these options. We don't need another 9 vs .40 thread. Thx.
Why not just use what you have? The 30 has no plans for a BUG so it should not matter. Buy a few lottery tickets and invest instead of buying a new Glock (they're all the same).
I have a 20SF and 21SF
I'm indecisive on which is "best" and have carried each.
I did not get the 10mm as a "woods gun" just a higher capacity higher KE carry option.
In before anyone post a blanket "10mm over penetrates" inaccurate generalization.
Rather than nip around the edges I'll cut to the chase. I want the versatility and power of the 10mm cartridge, from mild to wild, light to heavy, better on barriers. It is an exceptional round. The same cannot be said for the usual semi-auto rounds.
My recommendation would be the G20 for winter carry and a G29 for summer carry if you can comfortably carry and conceal guns that size.
Handgun calibers can never be depended on to stop a determined attacker. So you might as well be prepared with the most powerful handgun caliber that you can carry.
And that would be the 10mm loaded with the Underwood 180 grain bonded Gold dot which develops 1300fps/676fpe. Some would consider this "overkill" or more power than you need. But it's better to have the xtra power and not need it that to need the extra power and not have it and I would almost pity the fool that chose you a potential victim.
And you would still have the option of carrying a less powerful load if you somehow thought that the Underwood load was "Overkill".
Thanks for the link. You reminded me that it is going to be difficult to get certain types of ammunition in California in a few weeks when their "ammunition registration" program begins. :headscratch: So, I ordered a couple of boxes. I can load whatever I want for the most part, but I prefer to have factory ammunition on hand for self defense.
When I can dress for it, my preference is to carry my Glock 20. I like the ballistics, and I am most confident with that gun. My locale is very much a 4 seasons proposition, so I carry smaller platforms at other times.
The .45 is a time tested and proven round. The 10mm, while lacking the “street credentials” of the .45, has more load choices avaiable and is a potent SD load also. Either one will do you well. The path I chose was a G30 with an additional 10mm conversion barrel. That way I have both available for whatever appeals to me that day.
Do you use JHPs from major ammo manufacturers? Since neither .45 or 10mm are optimized with subcompacts, how's expansion with heavy clothing? It would seem that in subcompacts 9mm would be sort of useful, but evidently you prefer more effective calibers, even when using subcompacts.
I have stopped carrying my G30S full time and have switched to carrying a G29 Gen 4. I really like the G30S and I shoot it fairly well but my G29 seems more ergonomically accommodating to my hand size and style of shooting.
One of the reasons that the G20 is in the safe and the G21 is on the nightstand.
Unless the house is attacked by a bear, 230gr HST oughtta be sufficient.
Converted my G30 to 10mm awhile back with just a barrel & mag swap. Best of both...
