A friend of mine had his place broken into so he is looking into buying his first firearm. He is looking for a home defense/concealed carry gun in 9mm. I gave him a few options in that price range then realized he should probably factor in the cost for a GOOD holster and gun belt. Below are the guns I recommended. Some of which I have recommended on first hand experience, some based off of reviews and reputation, others based on name and price but don't know anything about them. Are there any guns on the list you would not recommened? Any not on the list that you WOULD recommend? What do you think would be the best gun in that price range leaving enough to get a good holster and belt?
First hand experience:
Glock 19
Springfield xd
Reputation:
M&P
Glock 43
Price (knowing not much abkut them):
Ruger SR9E
Canik TP9 (heard is was kind of a hidden gem)
Walther Creed
The Cabin comes in different models that should cover just about everything on a new shooter's wish list. As an added bonus, each new Cabin comes with a holster. The pistol is made in Turkey by a major military and aerospace manufacturer..
Sorry you lost me @9mm
Home Defense is Key in this Q = .223 pistol, 357mag, 357sig, 10mm, perhaps 45acp ... the first & last more recoil friendly if practice will be minimal.
$550 should buy SA 45 with best feel, trigger practice most anywhere
or a Extar 5.56, practice venues more limited
Hickok45 videos seem to suggest strongly these days we are leaving the short dbl-barrel shotgun behind and embracing the 223/556 for home defense ... a good source to watch for your friend
G26 Leo trade in. $320
Trl6 and holster combo $160
Box of critical duty +/- $20
I did this with a glock 27 last month and I'm pretty darned happy. Got my glock online and my light, laser, holster from the glock store. You can get 9mm boolets almost anywhere
I think he is preferring a new gun, but I think that is due to the fact he is relatively new to guns. So I imagine i could persuade him to a used gun if the price is right. A gen4.27 for $400 with 4 mags is a pretty good deal. I will start keeping an eye out for one of those.
I have 2 friends just bought shields on a bargain at 275.00 and have issues with feeding and mags locking up in the gun. Me personally will not buy any more S&W autos . I have also seen other M&P guns be very inaccurate. So I'm all glock ,HK and springfield
If price ends up being the deciding factor the 9e is a great gun, I have had 2 and both were perfect out the box I also have had the sr9c as well, those were fine as well, if I didn’t have my Glocks I’d still have the Rugers!
I see there are a bunch of CZ P07 Mexican contract guns going around for $400. Super reliable and accurate, you can't go wrong. Was thinking of building an 80% G19 but hell after all is said and done it will be over $650.
After reading your first sentence, I have many more questions first.
What is his experience level with firearms would be my first. You claim he is looking to buy his first, has he ever held a firearm? Does he know the difference between an automatic and a revolver?
I would start with the basics first, and then take him to a range that rents firearms. You can assume what might work best for anyone, but until that person puts a few rounds downrange, you will not know what works best for them.
The econo line of Kahr's is an option. I carry a PM9 daily, but the CM9 is a very good pistol for the money. Straight double action trigger and all Kahr trigger are very similar should he choose to expand into their other pistols. That said, my wife loves the G19 and I do as well. The CM9 will conceal much easier.
Same here. At that price range (or any price range) the Shield is a top carry choice. Thin and carries like a little gun but shoots like a big gun. (even the .45 Shield is controllable when shooting quickly)
My next gun is going to be the S&W Shield .45 with a Concealment Express appendix carry holster. Still kicking myself for not jumping on it back in the summer when they had a $75 rebate!
LEO Trade in Glock 19 or Glock 26 when available. An average retail cost of $370 makes these pistols very affordable. Most come with the lighter trigger and nights sights that still have some glow to them. You're still under $500 with upgrades or replacement parts. Plus 9mm being one of, if not the most common pistol round makes these pistols very affordable to shoot and maintain.
Join GSSF paying for a minium two year membership ($60). When his membership documents arrive, he will receive a coupon that can be used to buy one new Glock from a Blue Label dealer at Blue Label pricing (my BL dealer sells Glock 43 for $380, Gen4 or Gen5 19 for $425, and Gen4 26 for $425).
In twelve months, without paying any more to GSSF, he will receive another coupon to buy another Glock at Blue Label pricing.
There is no better deal on two new Glocks bought 12 months apart.
Go to the range, rent a couple handguns and what everyone he shoots well and likes that is what I would get...me personally I would get a Walther PPQ, or Walther PPS...Glock 19 would be a good choice too.
