im not sure why but lately I have a bug to get a 34. Ive got 2 43s, a 26 and a 17. My carry is a sort of customized 19 but for some reason I keep looking at the 34. I’ve had some bad luck with my arm, a surgery that clipped a nerve but I’m about back to normal and looking to make up time and get back into practice so as I figured out what to do the idea hit me that hey. The 34 is the perfect range gun. But I don’t know. Any input from guys who have one as well as the other 9mm guns?
i recently purchased a G34, my first non-compact Glock.
Ive been shooting my G26, 27 and 30S fairly well over the last 3 years, thanks to plenty of weekly practice. I bought the G34 out of curiosity and to perhaps "level up" from my subcompacts.
I thought that the significantly longer sight radius might have an immediate positive effect on my shooting. Unfortunately, this has not been the case in the first few hundred rounds.
After about 200rds of practice getting myself a little warmed up to the G34, I placed 2 targets side by side. On the left I shot 50rds with my G26 and on the right I did the same with the G34. I took my time with a steady cadence of about 1 shot per second. I started with the G26, finished the 50rds and then proceeded to shoot the target on the right with the G34.
My group size on the 34 was twice as large than on the 26... my G26 out shot my G34 easily. This was a bit surprising to me since I did expect to shoot at least as good with the longer site radius.
I concluded that perhaps the different grip on the 34 was causing me to slightly deviate from the target when I pulled the trigger.
I am well aware that ultimately and with everything else equal, no G26 will outshoot a G34. But I suppose it is just further proof (yet again) that when it comes to these things, it really our skills that make the biggest difference over the hardware.
Despite the initial disappointment, I plan to keep my new G34. I actually like it and look forward to the range time I need to put into it so that I can find out for myself how good it really is.
All else equal, the longer sight radius makes it easier to see delta in the sight picture, but not necessary any easier to manually hold the gun steady. If fact, it might be easier for you to hold the 26 steady simply due to familiarity.
Visual perception and physical mechanics are 2 different things. They need to work together, but they are not one thing.
The main thing I like about the 34 vs. the 17 and 19 is balance on faster splits, where the entire string is one fluid event. Doesn't really matter in slow fire, if you are returning the gun to a static sight picture with no time parameter. I also like feel of the 34 a little better shooting strong and weak hand.
I recently switched to a G34 for EDC. I can hit with it better at a distance.
