Just how many gunfights do you expect to survive?!

Some guys on this site (and others) like to brag about how many thousands of rounds of ammo they have stockpiled in case SHTF. I have to think unless you are outfitting and equipping the town militia by yourself, some of these numbers are pretty ridiculous.

You're probably not going to carry more than 200 - 250 rounds on your person at any given time.

Let's say you get into a gunfight and win the fight with your very last round. A thousand rounds of ammo means that you can participate in 4-5 such gunfights before running out of ammo.

With 10,000 rounds you could have 40-50 gunfights of this type... where you shoot yourself COMPLETELY dry every time.

Just how likely is it that in a SHTF situation you are going to survive 5 gunfights where you're burning through everything you carry.... let alone surviving 40-50 such gunfights.

Answer... pretty damn unlikely. If by some miracle you do, don't worry. That infantry battalion you mowed down will undoubtedly be carrying some weapons and ammo you can loot.

If you want to stockpile and hoard ammo as a hobby, go ahead. That's your option in most of this country. But don't kid yourself that even if the apocalypse strikes, you'll ever use all that ammo.

It's the unknown that must be prepared for if I knew I would need only enough ammo for two or three gunfights I would buy a couple boxes of ammo and forget about it. But reality has a way of jumping up and biting the unprepared on the behind. Time is the factor most often overlooked a major disaster, war, civil unrest etc. may last for years even decades before more ammo is available to civilians. Example the recent .22 shortage lasted for 4 years in good times for no other reason than greed and hoarding. This has taught the prudent the need to not to be caught short again. It would not be unreasonable if someone wanted to stock an estimated lifetime supply to have for personal use including barter. After all get caught short of ammo and your SOL!

I expect to survive every gun fight that I am in, and I hope that number is zero!

As far as how much ammo I keep on hand. I may have 1000 rounds of 9mm, but it is almost all practice ammo.
If I see a good quantity price, I buy. I will use it eventually.

I stockpile more important things for survival in the case of a SHTF incident.

Our Neighborhood is flooded for the first time EVER! We are all survivalist oriented and have supplies. I am wearing my Glock. Do desperate people see us as a source for supplies? It could happen.

I intend to survive THIS fight!

Prayers for everyone affected by the storm and the flooding. I have a good friend in Cypress that was spared. The photos from the flooding in Texas and southwest Louisiana is a painful reminder of the flooding in Louisiana a year ago. I was high and dry in another area of the country but I had friends and family there, that lost everything. A great bunch of guys in the Cajun Navy are coming to help out in the search and rescue area, some are already there.

What if there is an all out war in this country?

How much ammo would you want then?

Never say never.
If? I think you mean, when!

I have between 30k and 35k rounds of ammo and I have a feeling I'm going to need it all when the Muslims, blacks and illegals rise up in this country. I think there's even a television show encouraging them to do this.

Stay locked and loaded, everyone, because it is coming!

I have no plans on being in a gunfight, but then again nobody ever does. Pretty much I just maintain my inventory in case something happens and I am unable to acquire more for a while. Got caught with my pants down after Sandy Hook happened and I vowed never again. I don't have all that much loaded ammo on hand. A few hundred rounds each of 45 ACP, 10mm and 44 Magnum. However, I have enough primers, powders and bullets on hand to assemble several times that many if need be.

If it hits the fan you are alone you have to have enough ammo to keep them off your front lawn .only food will be what you stock pile only water what you stock pile ,no more Walmart.Banks closed if your going to stay home a safe room with all supplies gun sites on all 4 sides. You will never be able to trust anyone again.Total lost of communication. This could go on for months .The left wants this.

I don't buy just for me, I buy for my son and his son,
he doesn't even have a girlfriend yet, I am a long term
planner, many here are short term planners.

I can't believe we haven't learned anything from the
past eight years let alone the last twenty five years.

Ammo isn't just for defending yourself, I wonder how
many here has shot and ate a squirrel or deer or rabbit.

Like those of us who reload and have more primers than we're willing to admit, I suspect most of the ammo stockpilers do so more to be able to ride out future ammo shortages than for a SHTF armory. Remember when all Walmart had on the shelf was a few "oddball rifle calibers" and maybe some shotgun ammo? That could easily happen again. Then what do you do with your paperweights and clubs when there's no ammo to feed them?

Also, gun legislation in this country seems to center around "grandfathering", they often won't try to confiscate, but rather try to make future procurement illegal. How much is your gun worth if you haven't shot much lately (I'm guilty of this) I'm also guilty of not stocking much ammo, but I see the point in it. Also, historically, the price only goes up (seems like it outpaces inflation, but I haven't done the math)

99% of ammunition stores are NOT for post TEOTWAWKI.

It is for practice as the Gov. constricts owner ship. We already see this in California and Massachusetts where they want to limit the number of round you can purchase a month and TAX the hell out of it.

If I use 200 rounds shooting at others I would be surprised. I may on the ohter hand shoot a lot hunting, so... The rest is for practice and rising out times when there are ammo shortages.

The SHTF scenario I buy ammo for is 8-12 years of 2A unfriendly presidential or congressional regulation and/or legislation... and the aftermath. I like to shoot, and I didn't like paying $50 for the "privilege" of shooting 50rds of 45ACP a few years back. As such, I buy it cheap right now so I don't have to clog up Internet forums whining about the prices of ammo at some future date. You're welcome.

Wow, that sucks. How large/dense a population are we talking about, being displaced for probably a year or more? If the homes are going to be underwater for months, you can't even start reconstruction until the water's receded and the ground dried up.

If SHTF, I won't be too proud to loot. I will do whatever is necessary to ensure my family's survival. I will barter, cannibalize equipment, re-purpose whatever I can and yes, loot if I have to. I have enough ammunition stockpiled for self-defense, hunting and bartering purposes.

I enjoyed your thought-provoking post; it and many of the replies actually had me thinking about stocking up.

I have some (ammo), but I have thought the same thing, which is one reason I am right sizing my stuff. Though you did not mention in your question whether the gunfights were on the keyboard, or in real life.
