Seems to be the new thing to do. Run anyone over trying to deploy spikes.
I still think we should be able to use deadly force to stop pursuits. The jerkoff is putting countless lives at risk by running so we should end theirs quickly before they kill someone else.
Different things, usually deployed in different circumstances rather than as an "either/or" tactic; I have never stop-sticked anyone who was traveling less than 60+ mph (and often MUCH faster) and I have never PIT'ed anyone who was going faster than 45ish mph.....
We had a guy who was deploying sticks get hit intentionally about 12 years ago ; by some miracle, despite grave injuries, he survived...The pursuit was eventually ended not by a PIT but rather by a straight-up ramming by a commercial vehicle enforcement guy in an F-250....
You guys...can’t say we anymore...have to be selective about placement with stop sticks. Find a nice overpass to deploy immediately after or where there’s a storm drain or something you can get into. I had things somewhat preplanned in my mind where I could do stop sticks safely. They are a tool, but deploying them in the wrong manner can have this result.
I think in my 20 years we have done stop sticks twice. Our city streets were laid down by madmen who were drunk. Too many possibilities for suspects to take. I would deploy behind a squad car or guardrail.

The Supreme Court says it is allowed by the Constitution, it's just a matter of state law and department policies not allowing it, and the state law is a "maybe" here.

Reading that article he really sounds like a role model. He had been serving as long as his murderer has been alive.
Locally we had a drunk attempt to run over my friend when he deployed stop sticks earlier this year. He managed to dive out of the way and suffered minor injuries. I came on duty and took him to the hospital after. I was so angry I couldn't even hardly look at the suspect when I arrived on scene. A pursuit is lethal force against us and the citizens we serve. Once day maybe our collective legislators will recognize this fact.

I was my agency's Stop Stick instructor. Every training included emphasis (my own, added to the company's training outline) that it is a niche device and that opportunities to use them both effectively and safely are actually rare. We averaged two uses per year and, thank God and guys who follow their training, no deputies injured while doing so. I know that several times deputies opted to not deploy them because they didn't have cover from the suspect vehicle.
