It's sort of a don't ask, don't tell sort of thing, as she's generally not a fan of guns. She gets my full support if she wonders aloud about buying clothing or jewelry, so it essentially balances out.
I'm not supposed to buy any more. She claims i have too many. So when i do buy them they go in the back of the safe. Then when i pull it out she sees it coming from a pile. When she asks what it is i say "this old thing? I've always had it, figured it needed to be cleaned/ shot/groped".
I buy what I want. No issues with the wifey, as long as I buy her a new one too every now and then...Same with watches...If she complains about new stuff, I just flip flop from guns to watches, or vice versa...It's really just a shell game, now that I think about it!!
Well, my wife has been shooting since she was young. She shot trap with her Dad and she got into pistol shooting with me a few years ago. So, no, I don't need to "ask", we just decide when the best time to buy would be based on our budget (which is sorta loose-goosey anyway).
But that's how we do it with all "major" purchases, whether it's for her, me or both of us.
If I see something I know I want, I buy it. If I’m not sure, I discuss it with her, because she’s into guns. Not sure that’s always a great idea, as she did encourage me into getting my Kimber. :yuck:
Pro tip from a longtime hoarder who has been married for 25 years:
Your goal should be two-fold. First, get out of debt. All debt, including house, car, etc. Get your retirement and college funds healthy. This frees up your cashflow so wifey maybe does not care where every dollar goes.
Step two is to acquire so many guns that a new one looks exactly like your other 20 or 50 guns. This holds true also with knives, multitools, flashlights and Man Sacks. When you reach a critical mass, wifey can no longer tell that your new gun or knife is not part of the collection. This critical mass is called the Powernoodle Event Horizon.
When you have the cashflow to buy guns at will, and own enough of them that Mrs. Wifey does not notice that the new PT111 in your holster was purchased just this morning, you have reached Glory. This is the goal of every husband. You get that satisfied look on your face that Andy Dufresne had on the rooftop in Shawshank Redemption, and life is good.
I never lie to my wife. It has been working for us for decades now.
She knows there’s a method to my madness. She reads the range reports that I post for my friends so she has an idea of what I’m up to. Every so often we’ll go out to the range together and I’ll show her “the best” of what I’ve picked up recently so she can feel and understand differences in guns and ballistics. She likes the fruit shooting vids I put up too.
This may sound preachy, but it’s been a key to our ongoing happiness.
1. Make sure the important stuff is paid for and covered first before spending on fun things.
2. Be transparent or at least allow transparency. For me, the range reviews let her review what I’m up to at her leisure. She doesn’t care most of the time, but if she did care she could read the reasoning rather than me having to answer an interrogation blind sided.
I do not look at it as I have to ask. I look at it as a respect for my wife and we discuss major purchases together. Now some would say 500 to 1k is not a major purchase but for some it is.
Nope. Mine is always with me. Literally. She's usually the one saying, "Get it if you want it." The only times she's ever drawn the line was with $2000-3000 Pythons.
if i can afford to buy a Gun and i plan on it i will pass it by her to see if there`s a reason i should`nt or more pressing need for the money.
she does the same with any purchase like that.
it`s not really permission its a courtesy.
PowerNoodle is right. We have no debt, retirement is in great shape. We have three colors of money (mine, hers and joint). She doesn't care what I spend mine on, I don't care what she spends hers on; the joint stuff we discuss.
I'll go off to a gun show. She'll ask what I got. If I say nothing, she asks why not.
