Self defense ammunition ?

what’s the difference and results between the different grains of bullets. I’m currently using 9mm gold Dot 124 grain what would be the plus and minuses of that particular 124 grain round. Would be curious to what others are using and possibly why.

IMO, with modern premium JHPs there is very little difference in performance between grain weights of various rounds. Most, if not all, are designed to meet the FBI specification of 12-18 inches of penetration in gel and at least 1.5x expansion. As a general rule-of-thumb the heavier grain bullets are going to penetrate a little deeper and expand less, and the lighter grain bullets are going to expand more but penetrate less. However, like I said they will all pass the FBI test and I wouldn't stress about your choice too much. Just buy whatever is available at a good price and test it in your gun and you should be good-to-go.

“general rule-of-thumb the heavier grain bullets are going to penetrate a little deeper and expand less, and the lighter grain bullets are going to expand more but penetrate less.”

That was the exact information I was looking, understood the pros and cons of each thanks.

What length barrel are you shooing it through? 4 or 5 inch barrel, not a problem. 3 inch barrel I'd go to 124+P with Gold Dots.

I use something totally different than what we carry at work. I have complained on here before about what a crap round we use. In my own weapon which honestly, would be the one that I would be more likely to have to use because of my job now, I carry 135 grain Critical duty in standard pressure.
I started using them after doing some research on youtube watching some of the more technical test results. Not Bubba shooting into a barrel of water either. TN outdoors9 is a good one to watch for ammo info. There are others on there also that I cannot remember their name right now but basically if they are actually using gel I will at least watch the video. If it is Bubba doing wasting bandwidth I skip it. You can get some decent info from them though by just watching one day when your not doing anything else.

Although I've stocked up on Federal HST 147 gr standard pressure.
I'm running the new Federal HST 150 gr Micro in my sub-compact 9mm guns

Along with gel test results.
In my hands, my guns group better and shoot softer
with heavy for caliber, standard pressure, sub-sonic ammo.
147 gr 9mm, 180 gr 40 S&W and 230 gr 45 ACP.
I'm happy with LE ammo from Federal, Speer or Winchester.
But prefer Federal.
I generally get outstanding and consistent accuracy from Federal HST

Nothing wrong with your 124 gr Gold Dots, that's a fine load.

I have a slight preference for 147 gr loads though. I just like the feel of the recoil a little better and the slight increase in penetration.

I usually carry 147 gr HST but I can substitute for 124 gr bullets or Gold Dots if that's what's available.

Are you using the plus P loads or regular gold dot 124. I’m using a plus P, but heard some negative comments about the +P. So thinking of going to the regular 124 grain. (Glock 26 Glock 19) What’s your thoughts.

I carry a Gen3 19 pretty often and have carried Rem Golden Saber 124-gr+P JHP for years as it has a good reputation, is commonly available, and most importantly, I shoot it well.
