Ok so been toying with the idea of adding a red dot sight to either my WASR, or my m92. Had my eye on one of the Primary Arms micro dot sights lately. Now the issues I'm having is.......
1. Do I really need a red dot?
2. Which AK do I put it on?
3. Which mount do I get
With the WASR I could use the ultimak mount, or the side rail setup. Not really crazy about the side mount thing though.
If I install it on the m92 I could do the Stormwerkz rail and mount it on the top cover, or also could use the ultimak rail.
So that's my dilemma. I know AK'S aren't really made for optics and that's also a valid point. Could just buy the optic and add it to my AR-15 and not worry about optics on the AK.
I have the older Kobra red dot standard side mount on my SGL-21. You get more of a "chin" weld rather than cheek weld. There is no co-witness with the irons but, I don't see that as a big deal. If I want irons, I just slide the Kobra off. I think red dots in general are great for people with older eyes (like me). AK's are made for optics - Russian optics - which are definitely not like AR optics.
The AK side mount was made for optics and they require some getting use to. I have a PSOP 8x42 scope that actually sets off to the left of the middle of the receiver but I can work it just fine. I guess I just like using what was made for the AK.
I have looked at the ultimaks and forward mounted red dots and don't see why they wouldn't work as would the top cover rails. The only thing about top cover mounted rails, I don't know how solid they are. Whatever you decided on, just train with it until it becomes familiar to you...
I'm 58 and have a couple of AK's. My 58 year old eyes just can't do the iron sights as much as I wish they could.
I have a SAM7 and got a Vortex Sparc II on an RS Regulate mount. Great set up and I can hit accurately out to 100 yards.
My other AK is a Century C39V2. I used a Midwest Industries mount and installed a Leupold 1-4X Hog reticule. Being a milled receiver plus the weight of the optic and mount, it's a beast.
Red dots are superior for quick target acquisition at shorter ranges (sub 100 yards) than iron sights. Since AKs excel at these shorter ranges, a red dot is a logical choice. Mounting them on AKs are tricky, but I will leave it to the AK gurus to help you out on that aspect.
My dad has an ultimak on his WASR with a T1. It works fine I like it better that the setups over the dust cover. Do you need one? Probably not but if you want one get it. I just ordered an AK from Ryfle Dynamics and don't plan on putting anything on it but a sling and surefire scout light.
Decided on the Manticore setup. Going to go with plumb handguards and top cover for the PA micro dot. Already have a plumb Magpul grip on it. Found the optic mount on ebay for a cheap price. Just waiting on the lower handguard and red dot to arrive!
Dammit now I can't decide on the mount.....I like the Ultimak and the Manticore Arms Renegade stuff, but now I'm torn between them. The Ultimak would be one piece and boom mount the optic and be done. Can use the my factory wooden lower grip. The Manticore Arms setup is nice and looks cool however the top cover is sold separately which blows. The hand guards are $60 then the plate is additional $70. Plus side would be the hand guards would be all polymer and look ninja tacticool.
" I have the ultimak rail and the zeiss red dot mounted forward on one of my bulgy aks with milled receiver. I love the setup- it co-witnesses. And is so much better than the very short rearto front sight distance! The red dot has solar cells on top to recharge batteries constantly while using- this is also a nice feature!
The RS Regulate set up is pretty much the defacto go to side mount set up. Have you considered that one? Ultra light and fits tight to the rifle. Will put the RDS right in the middle and can lower third co witness with your front sight
Easily removed and remounted with no change to zero. I've used to hit torso sized steel no problem at 200 yards with a humble ol' Bushnell TRS25
So I decided what I'm doing finally. Bought the ultimak rail. Going to use it on my WASR. Ordered it from supply patriot I believe. Good prices and free shipping. Ordered the PA micro dot as well. Eventually I plan on getting a optic setup on the m92 also. Then I can swap the optic out as I feel the urge.
Looking forward to getting the pieces Thursday and mounting them on the WASR. The ultimak seemed like the best choice for my particular wants. Got the Primary Arms micro dot coming also. The one with the 6 year battery life and 2 MOA. Also has the 1/3 co-witness which is pretty cool. It had some amazing reviews and was affordable. Hopefully will get to go shoot it on Sunday unless the wife has some hidden projects....ugh. Hate those hidden projects!!!!!!
Well, I just adjusted my SGL-21 irons and was hitting pretty well at 100 meters. But my eyes are old and it takes lots of work.
I always intended to put an optic on this carbine, so I just acquired the Arsenal mount and just ordered a Holosun HUD circle dot optic. I am sure it will improve my accuracy. I like to keep weight to a minimum. The Holosun weighs in at about 9 oz all up. I am not sure how much the mount weighs, but it is not too bad.

Looks good, OP! I just added the same red dot to my Norinco MAK90... I’ve had the primary arms advanced micro dot on my AR for a little while and LOVE it, so I figured I’d pick up it’s little brother for the AK.
