I've seen some of these pop up at the local shops now and then.

As a general rule, I try to avoid buying Colts made between 1980s through 2005s. The quality control during this time period ranged from atrocious to blah.

I do have two samples from this time period:

1. M1991A1 Compact (aka the cheap Officer's ACP). Why? Just because I wanted an M1991A1 representative and didn't want to pay too much for one.

2. Gold Cup National Match in mirror polished stainless steel. I got it for pretty cheap and that was the main reason. That and the gun looks very pimpy. The mirror polished finish isn't even - it looks like something that came from Ruger and not Colt. Thank goodness it shot and shoots decent. Not great but decent, definitely doesn't live up to the Gold Cup name.

I'm not a Colt enthusiast but the more I know about this company the more their 1911's are like wine.

The original vintage is esteemed, some years are better, certain varieties have been mixed and some are downright corked.

One gun in the estate collection was a Colt 2000 or All American 9mm. I almost bought the gun just to have an example of how a Colt bought a reliable Knight/Stoner design and screwed it up my their incompetent modifications.
Willie,

Before 2011 my M1911 stash totaled a big count of ONE: Springfield Armory GI model with some minor massage.

Then in 2011 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 1911 design, I bought a plain Jane blued Government Model Series 80 in .38 Super. It shot so incredibly accurate that I promptly bought a second one.

Next thing I know a few years later I must have bought 30-Colts. Most are current production with a few dated back to early 1970s.

Hell, in 2017 alone I bought five .38 Super Colts.

Gave away the Springfield and the ATI. The only non-Colt I have is the SW Gunsite. I like The Raven.

I like that, it's pretty cool! And I'll show how young I am by calling it border-line "retro", being from the 90's and all. ;)

From what I've learned about Colt in my research, and the examples I've had in my hands, I'm not quite as pessimistic as fnfalman about Colts from that 20-year period, but it really pays to be able to put your hands on the one you're looking to buy before putting down your money.

(To be honest, there are several manufacturers I recommend doing that with their current product too *cough* RugerSIGRemingtonMarlin *cough*.)

I have the precursor to that. A Combat Govt which I bought new in 1985.

It was the first Colt to come with a beveled (slightly) mag well, flared lowered ejection port. It had wrap around grips like yours and oddly, a serrated front strap under the grip.
