My daughter in Law bought a single stack S&W in .40 and i'm looking for the best price on 50 rd boxes of Fed HST 180 gr. SGAmmo has it for around 22 + shipping.
Do any of you know of a better current price? She'll probably buy bulk range ammo and a couple of boxes of HST.
I just bought a bunch of HST's from Bone Frog Gun Club for like $17/box of 50, but I am not sure if they carry the 40 cal version or not, maybe only 9mm and 45? SGAmmo is always the second place I look.
You could also use ammoseek, just play with the search criteria a little to assure you only get what you are looking for, cheapest first (also make sure you check the shipping cost, sometimes the lowest guys make it up in S&H.. )
PS - I just did a quick ammoseek and it looks like Target Sports has brass cased 180gr HST's for $15/50. I might get some myself.
My favored carry load for my G42 is the Underwood +P 90gr XTP. It clocks in at like 1200fps. -JCN- did some extensive penetration and expansion tests of lots of calibers and loads he posted in these forums and the UW +P XTP came in about the best for the 380's.
They are so costly (only sold in the 20 round boxes), I worked up a practice/simulation load that mimics it using PD FMJ's, now I can actually afford to practice with a very similar load.
I just ordered some .40 HST 180's from TargetSports. I think it was around 17-18.00 a box of 50. And they had plenty in stock. Government overage purchase.
You guys are awesome. I virtually never buy factory ammo unless it is 22 or shot shell. By happenstance, I drifted over to Caliber Corner. Otherwise, I would have never known about some of these discounters for SD ammo.
So when I've had occasions to freshen up the SD ammo, I just assumed that $24 per box of 20 was about normal.
With regard to brass cased HST's, it has always been explained to me that when you see brass, it was a contract over run kind of thing (surplus, if you will). That is, the ammo was bid with brass for cost reasons, or the brass was spec'ed by the customer, because it is a lot easier to force a vendor to change the case material than it is to change a spec. You might have to put your donut down and type a few emails..
I didn't read the TS text, maybe they explain its origin for this particular sale. It sure seems like a surplus blow out price.
It seems Target Sports sale was from a Border Patrol over run IIRC. Some say it is loaded a bit hot, but I can't confirm that.
I'm not a 180 grain fan, but for the price I would give it a run, I just don't need a case of it.
I bought a case of the HST .40 180 from Target Sports a couple of weeks ago at the $14.99/50 price shipped, or $299 per case shipped. Could not pass that up.
I too bought a case of the 180HST. The chronograph says the brass and nickel plated ammo perform identically. In my past, I always found that the nickel plated cases seemed to crack after a few reloads. My metallurgy background suggests that it may happen due to hydrogen embrittlement in plating. That is irrelevant for most users but is useful to me. The brass HST is a real deal at $300/1k.
Just went there and was reading about it. Is it 8% across the board? They don't tell you in the Q&A. At $95 a year, that's not a bad deal if you shoot much, mostly because of the free shipping. Of course it's always free shipping on cases, but sometimes I just want to try a few boxes of this or that.
Just checked, I've placed 3 orders with them since June. 8% discount and free shipping would have saved me $70. If I had bought all of my ammo through them, I no doubt would have saved more than the $95 cost of membership.
Hmmm... Might have to join. Thanks for mentioning it.
