I would trade my 4 week old g19 for a g17 in a heart beat. I heard all the catter about how great the g19 is and with its size it would be a great c.c. pistol. But in my hands and eyes it doesn't hold a candle to the g17. Which I will have another gen 4 or 5 of shortly. g19 goes into safe may be wife will use it. Is it just my large hands or my small brain.
Not all Glocks are for everyone. I have both, like both, and carry both. But I do like the way the grip of the 17 feels in my hands better than the 19.
I can understand someone claiming that the 17 is a little more appealing than the 19, or that the 19 is a little more appealing than the 17. After all, they are the same gun with one being a bit larger than the other. However, only a drama queen would claim that one is vastly superior to the other or that one “couldn’t hold a candle to the other”.
To each their own. I ccw a 19 and shoot it pretty well but the Glock that fits my hand the best is the full-size framed (non-SF) Glock 21. Even have a Hogue sleeve on mine.
I recently bought a G19 Gen 4 after carrying a G-21 SF Gen 3 for years, concealed. I like the 19 but am wishing I went with the 17, the 19 feels just a bit small for me, might feel a little different if I'd got the Gen 5 without the finger grooves.
IMHO The Gen 4 G19 is the best carry pistol, in the universe.
It needs breathing on, like all CCW pistols. TruGlo fibre-optic sights, Glock factory extended slide lock lever (slide release!) flush fit butt plug. Snip the bottom of the magazine release off, digs into my second finger.
The trigger weight, 4.5 lbs. It carries well, is accurate, and 16 rounds of Ranger T 147g hollow points, quite the show stopper. Again, in my honest opinion!
I agree that the 17 grip feels better than the 19 (to me)....and I just have average size hands.
Now, a 19 with an undercut trigger guard....feels like a totally different animal.
Even though the 17’s grip feels better to me, I’ve gone “all 19” for my carry use...with undercut trigger guards.
If I had big hands and a bigger body frame, I’d be a 17 carrier for sure.
My primary carry is a gen2 G-23, I have 2 of them.
I also have 2 gen2 G-19s I like all of them.
I shoot the 9mm most because of price of ammo.
I have a G-19 set up the same as my G-23, same night sights,
same Decal-Grip, same Pachmeyer slip on grips.
They feel the same in the hand and firing grip.
So I practice with the 19 most, and carry the 23.
I do practice with the 23 and carry ammo also.
I agree with cal williams in that the 17 does feel better in my hands than the G-19. I have a couple G-19's and a G-23 that I carry a good bit when I'm off. With my duty gun being a G-22 and my GSSF choices being a G-17, G-17C, and G-34 I tend to shoot those a great deal more than their smaller counterparts. His statement "But in my hands and eyes it doesn't hold a candle to the g17" is merely a subjective observation and not a general evaluation of the G-19 and certainly not a "drama queen" claim. While I share his observation I still feel that the mid-size variants as well as the "subs" have their place and I intend to keep them all.
I am sure that I would prefer a G17 over a G19 as far as just plain old shooting. I have never owned or held a G19, so I am just speculating. This comes from my preference of longer barreled firearms in most cases. And would prefer a G34 over the G17. Of course I am talking about just shooting and not a carry firearm.
Now with that said. I carry a G27. But I wish that I would have at least bought a G23 for that purpose. I can shoot the G27 well. But I do use G23 mags. I like to be able to get more than two fingers on the grip. The G27 serves its purpose. But I would not choose it again for a carry pistol. It is just to small for my liking.
Like said in other post. We all have our personal preferences.
I like both my Gen 5's, in the 19 and 17, they feel great in hand are super accurate, and both can be carried EDC, with the 19 winning here for size, but I'm tall and can also wear the 17 also as concealed, 16 rounds verses 18 isn't a big deal for me, I'm a good shot and feel I wouldn't need more than a couple shots to end any problem, unless out gunned and even then an extra magazine carried would help there, I have 6 Gen 4's that are also in my EDC rotation, some as back up and some for different conditions, all are fantastic...and reliable...
I just bought a gen 5 17 instead of a 19 because the flared magwell/cutout on the 19 plays hell with my pinky. Still have gen 4 19 that performs flawlessly, just not crazy about finger groves.

I would think this has something to do with the size of our hands and the grip we use, I have several Gen 4's, but I have to say my Gen 5, 19 and 17 feel better in my hand, and when firing, I've heard there are some that don't care for the mag well as well as the cut out, but it isn't an issue for me, if this cut out is sharp on the edges, you can always bevel it down some to make it more comfortable and should only take a couple minutes to do, like you my Gen 4 , 19 is a keeper, and one of my house guns, laser and light equipped...the 17 was a good choice, I really like mine and the full grip...
i wasn't a fan of the 19's grip and much preferred the 17 until i added a magwell (suarez). It doesnt add any length to the gun and it does make mag changes faster but my primary reason for liking it is how much better it makes the gun feel in my hand.It locks my hand in place where before i never felt that i had a as good a purchase on the gun compared to the 17.
My G19 3rd generation loves my hand, seems to be the perfect mix between size and number of rounds, hasn't burped in over 500 rounds, is so simple to dissemble, maintain and is proportionately more easy on my eyes than others. It's easily the finest, easy to wield 9 mm platform I've owned in over 50 years of shooting. JMO,....as well.
I just purchased a G19 last month, I like the control I have as a new shooter and the weight distribution is perfect for me, and I can zero in on my target.
For me:
The best feeling is the baby glock with an extended +2 base plate.
The next best is the standard 20, 21 frame (WTF!)
The next best is the full size 17, 22, 31 frame
The last is the 19, 23, 32 frame
The compact and subcompact frames are the best for grip consistency though. They tend to squish my hand in a way that forces a high and tight grip.
Like OP I "used" to have large hands but was forced to drop my beloved & arguably most reliable pistol of all time 1911's after 49+ years of carry. OLD Age does incredible things to us with its surprises like arthritic hands.
Dropped to a G19 but now love it. Also, feels like a feather on my belt compared to any of my 1911's. Carry 2 spare mags. now instead of 5.
I do feel that if you can't settle something that can't be settled Non Lethal, with 5 or 6 rounds such as a revolver though, man your really in one world of manure! I just like the extra ammo available as in today's word, who knows?
The beauty of a free country is that we have a freedom of choice. I just got my first Glock, a G19 Gen 4, and it is a fine weapon. I have old arthritic hands and most of the smaller guns were/are too hard to rack. I have no trouble with the G19 and it feels good in my hands.
This feel good in the hands thing... I can't tell if Gen 3 or Gen 4 grips are any better for me over the other.
I have a Gen 3 so I'm able to handle it more and I've developed some new calluses as a result on the middle and ring finger from the front strap. Shot both Gen 3 and Gen 4 yesterday to compare muzzle jump, the dual recoil is moot.
The last pistol I sold, I chose based on the fit of the grip which was a Sig P320. Even after handling Glocks, the P320 always feels "right at home" in my hand, but I still sold it.
