Rolling Stone and the AR15

While waiting hours for my car to be fixed I stumbled onto a Rolling Stone article from Dec 1, 2016 titled All American Killer (sorry, no link). It was about what I expected from RS; chock full of questionable facts and slanted heavily against America's rifle. One astounding set of factoids was the devastating ballistics of the "needlenosed" high velocity round. Tales of a single bullet entering the heel and splitting the leg up to the hip, and a tiny .22 bullet behaving more like a Coke can than the "stabbing effect" of nearly every other caliber bullet. Now I don't buy any of this, but I have heard tales of tumbling bullets in flesh that tear impressive wounds. I think its possible some of the BS has some basis in fact; the loads used in Vietnam, different rifling twist rates, etc. I'm certain there is a wealth of knowledge about this subject among the GT denizens. Please share.

Don't read RS. It'll fry your brain, kid.

Military 5.56 ammunition is designed to yaw and FRAGMENT in flesh. Its creates a nasty wound with very lethal results.

Could it shred a leg from end to end? I hope so!

A .308/30-06 military round is capable of separating said limb from the body if hit just so....
I was told if you got hit in the thumb with a .50 caliber Browning round the shock would kill you.

Sorry it took you hours to get your car fixed, more sorry you had to endure RS. Soldier of Fortune magazine wouldn't be my first choice for a review of Zac Brown's CD, so not shocking that RS didn't get accurately represent a gun article.

Funny things happen at 2000+ fps. I know of a Basic Training accident where a recruit was hit (safe to read "self inflicted") in the hip with a 5.56 round. It somehow bounced "up" from the hip bone, shredded though the digestive track and into the chest.

FMJ’s can create some nasty wounds on occasion but for every verified story of a 5.56 FMJ creating a spectacular wound, there are 5 stories of soldiers having to hit enemy combatants 4 and 5 times to get a stop. There is a reason FMJ’s are illegal for hunting. Because they don’t do the damage that expanding bullets do. FMJ’s are designed to wound not kill. That said, stopping a threat is more about shot placement then the bullet.

Because it is impossible for ******* morons to keep their brain damaged ideology and politics out of anything they are involved in. Kinda like it is impossible for a vegan to not tell everyone they are a vegan.

Rolling Stone is only read by those with diseased, liberal minds. It doesn't surprise me, especially since I saw their other article where they want all guns outlawed. They are the fringe, and we don't want their Antifa readers as gun owners anyway.

During the earliest days of project agile ( written about extensively in ed ezell's book the black rifle m16 retrospective) the advisors in Vietnam using early versions of the m16 with a 1-14" twist ( making for a marginally stable bullet which impacted flesh and became quickly unstable) reported dramatic wounding potential in field reports. As time went on the decrease in twist rate first to 1-12 (to allow bullet stability in cold weather after it was found the bullets couldn't stabilize out of 1-14 twists in sub freezing weather) then 1-7 with the 855 round plus the decreased velocity developed in the carbine length barrels the sounding capability definitely decreased ( as noted in reports out of Somalia in 1993)

Here's the top of the heap for their target demographic. I'm pretty sure that facts only make their heads hurt.
The Cover of "Rolling Stone"
Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show
Well, we're big rock singers
We got golden fingers
And we're loved everywhere we go (that sounds like us)
We sing about beauty and we sing about truth
At ten-thousand dollars a show (right)
We take all kinds of pills that give us all kind of thrills
But the thrill we've never known
Is the thrill that'll gitcha when you get your picture
On the cover of the Rollin' Stone

(Rollin stone) want to see my picture on the cover
(Stone)Wanna buy five copies for my mother (yes)
(Stone)Wanna see my smilin' face
On the cover of the Rollin' Stone (that's a very very good idea)

I got a freaky ole lady name a cocaine Katy
Who embroideries on my jeans
I got my poor ole grey haired daddy
Drivin' my limousine
Now it's all designed to blow our minds
But our minds won't really be blown
Like the blow that'll gitcha when you get your picture
On the cover of the Rollin' Stone

(Rollin Stone) want to see our pictures on the cover
(Stone) want to buy five copies for our mothers (yeah)
(Stone) want to see my smilin' face
On the cover of the Rollin' Stone
(talking) Hey, I know how
Rock and roll

Ah, that's beautiful
We got a lot of little teenage blue eyed groupies
Who do anything we say
We got a genuine Indian Guru
Who's teaching us a better way
We got all the friends that money can buy
So we never have to be alone
And we keep getting richer but we can't get our picture
On the cover of the Rollin' Stone

(Rollin stone)Gonna see my picture on the cover
(Stone) Gonna buy five copies for my mother (wa wa)
(Stone) Gonna see my smilin' face
On the cover of the Rollin' Stone
On the cover of the Rollin'
Stone) Gonna see my picture on the cover
(talking) I don't know why we ain't on the cover, baby
(Stone) Gonna buy five copies for my mother

(Stone) Want to see my smilin' face
(talking) I ain't kiddin', we would make a beautiful cover
On the cover of the Rollin' Stone
