But with a new barrel, stock, action, scope, underpants, rings and mounts and it will be good as new.
By the the time the gunsmith has it ready, his fingers should have healed enough to be able to hold it.
Certainly looked like a barrel obstruction the way it banana peeled like this one with the laser bore sight. It came from a FB reloading page; no other info now.
You can't blow up a gun with black powder, it would just blow out the barrel unburnt. This was probably a rifle designed to shoot smokeless, so a barrel obstruction is the likely suspect, although an overcharge with smokeless is possible, too.
Never shot BP but I know more than a few who put their guns up uncapped instead of shooting to clear. Maybe loaded up on top of a already charged barrel.
Even a double charge wouldn't do that. I proofed BP guns I built by double charging them and firing off sand bags and a long string. That is only if both charges are firmly down in the breech. If there is an air gap between the loads, that is a barrel obstruction and could cause a rupture like that.
I think using smokeless might be a possibility.
Well, at least this guy didn't stick around to see what was going to happen next like the guy with the Smith 500 did in the other video I posted.
"We had an ugly reminder this weekend that you can never be to safe. I decided to film my good buddy off my hip as I looked down the spotter. Little did I know what would ensue, as you will/have watched. Muzzleloader season is almost upon us and for other states it's here. Please please be safe and check your gun before you load and fire it. We don't know the exact reason as to why this ultimate muzzleloader blew up but it did. This accident could have been a lot lot worse for my buddy but someone was looking over him and he is extremely lucky. Safety first and always!"
His fingers needed a few stitches, but he will heal.
