West German SIG P220

With all the SIG P320 bashing going around this will hopefully be a refreshing change.

Just as I think I've had enough something always seems to pop up...this time it was a 1991 production West German SIG P220. For the most part it's in good shape, though the Hogue grips on it aren't original, and the grips screws themselves consisted of three blued allen cap screws and one blued slotted screw - and all were somewhat rusty, meh.

So on the way home from the gunstore after purchasing it I stopped off at the hardware store and sized up the screws (M5-0.8 thread pitch for these early models), and located some stainless steel allen cap screws about 0.25" longer than were required. After a detail strip, clean, and lube of the pistol I went at the screws, shortening each to the proper length, then polishing, and finally flame coloring the heads so they wouldn't look so chromish. I think she cleaned up well:

(The .50BMG fodder is 'Yugo '88 ball)

Some screw head detail:

Factory grip screws are available from SIG, but since the grips aren't original, not having original grip screws isn't bothering me in the least. Plus working on them gave me something to do for a while, it keeps me off the streets ;)

I'll hopefully get to check it out soon.

Very nice. Regardless how you feel about current offerings, it's hard not to like the Sig classics.

I have a couple WG P220s from 1976 and 1983, both all original in their box. Both in the original 9mm caliber, of course...
In other words, you bought the lady's models. :aodnsb:

My favorite carry gun is my P220 Elite Dark. It just fits period. Being a lefty Sigs were never really my friend when there were others around that made a better duty gun for me. Now that that is past, I can be a little more relaxed and found that after trying them again it really wasn't a problem to operate the controls lefty. Just needed to adapt. Those are some really nice examples of a extremely fine weapon. P.S. Yes, mine is a .45 acp.

Congratulations!!!

I have the same Hogue grip panels on my West German P220 as well. I wish that I had kept the original plastic slim panels instead of going with the then hype of rubber grips.

Very nice "proper" Sig, at some point you might want to get a couple new roll pins and the appropriate punches for the breech block. When they start to wear bad things can happen.

Thanks fa fa fal man! I'm having a helluva time locating original grips, and I'm not wanting to modify the gun any farther than it already is from it's original configuration just to be able to adorn it with the later style grips. Ohhhhhhhhh woe is me, such a quagmire, etc., LOL.
