I've narrowed it down to 2 maybe 3. Which 1911 do you prefer ? Colt competition series 70 .45 ACP or Ruger SR1911 ? Also what about S&W 1911's ?

Issue sights you can see, on a series 70? What a joke. Those tiny sights were WHY we developed all the big sights of today. To not have a ducktail grip safety, overtravel stop in the trigger, lowered ejection port, Gold Cup mod to the half cock notch, modified feed ramp, speed safety is to have a fumble-slow gun, which aint very reliable with anything but ball ammo.
With all due respect, please do a Gunbroker search on current Series 70 Colts. These are Custom Shop fitted pistols, have much more than the old "bump and a hump" sights, and mine have been VERY reliable with many loadings, including 185 grain "flying ashtray" JHPs.

As to beavertail being a requirement, not for me. Nice, easy enough to add if you want, but needed? I can, and have, lived (so far) without them. Lowered ejection port really only matters if you reload. I don't, not for carry ammo, and I prefer a more traditional profile. Hasn't stopped a well lubed stainless Colt Series 70 I've owned from plucking and shucking empties for years and years.

Just my $. 02. YMMV.

Dan Wesson, great fit and finish and totally reliable
I have a Regent SS .45 ACP 6" model 80, a Ruger LW Commander Series 70 .45ACP and a Dan Wesson PM9 Series 70.
The Regent I did the 10 cent trigger job, the Ruger is 100 stock and the DW is 100 stock.
The DW is by far the most accurate gun of any flavor I have shot. However, both of the others are as good or better than a Colt Gold Cup Series 70 (single owner, trigger work) and other stray rented 1911 guns. With over 1000 rounds thru both the Regent and the Ruger, no wear marks on either. Just as a side note, if I could have only handgun it would be my Glock 17 Gen 4.

I'm sure it would be no problem for me to carry any of the talked about 1911, I have had and still have a few, I bought the Ruger sr1911 because i wasn't going to carry any of my others in the swamp but I will have to say that after shooting it on a few outings it has became my first choice when in the woods or swamp. it shot well enough that my son and a friend both picked one up.

I am on the fence as well. I plan on buying a 1911 in the next few days.
1. I really want the Colt Compitition model.
2. The SA RO, has a great promo deal out now. I just don't like that front sight, but would get that changed out.
3. The Ruger, I don't think I have heard many, if any complaints about out it.

The Series 70s from Colt have, for many, many years been made with tall fixed sights - you really can see the sights. They are throated, and they work fine with defense ammo.

I don't carry a 1911a1 for the same reason I don't drive a Model T or Model A. The 1911a1, while innovative at the time has been surpassed by technology of todays modern handguns. I'd much rather carry a modern, striker fired handgun that's much more reliable and lighter weight then a relic of the past. If you want one for nostalgic reason I fully understand. I love older guns like the Sharps carbines, Colt SAA and cap n' ball revolvers but I'd not carry or use any of them for self-defense unless I absolutely had no other choice. If you want a good 45 acp semi-auto handgun give the Glock G21, Smith and Wesson M&P 45 M2.0 or a number of other modern handguns a look before you plop down your hard earned cash. Been there, done that and didn't get a Tee Shirt.

Well a little update. I went to the LGS to buy a 1911. They had 3 Rugers, I narrowed it down to one. Then I said to the guy, that the last time I was here you had some used Sigs. So he produced a Sig Tacops for $100 more than the used Rugers. 4 mags, night sights and a rail (don't know how I feel about that) so I went with the Sig.

I knew it going into the sig platform, but holsters are few and far between. I think i will get an Alien Gear.

I've learned the hard way. For me its Sig Sauer Ultra Compact - flawless out of the box and Colt Defender - flawless out of the box. Also no problems with Colt Marine 1911, Republic Forge, and Gary Reader Texas Ranger Special BBQ gun. Have my Oriskany Arms 1911 back in he shop for "tune up" since it didn't work out of the box. Will NEVER buy a Springer again after TWO were bad out of the box and after being "fixed." still didn't work. Trial and error. Its not really a 1911 but its 1911-like love my Colt Mustang .380 also flawless out of the box. Sold off all my striker fired plastic guns. Now just 1911 and revolvers. So much less agony now.
