The front of my van is separated from the back with a wood partition with a plexi glass window which goes across the van in back of driver and passenger seat. It keeps the A/C up front. And also in the event of an accident, it stops all my tools and bins in the back from sliding forward like missiles. I have a hidden compartment built into the partition that has a magazine rack that holds my flat metal invoice book, maps, flashlight, papers, etc. There is also a narrow compartment for a Rem police 870 with folding stock built into it and hidden. For the fun of it, I've asked friends to locate where the 870 is hidden, but they look right at the 5" wide compartment with shotgun and can't find it. I also have a shelf with technical books next to my seat that has a small hidden compartment for a pistol. Sometimes I go to do a service call and don't realize its in the fringes of a bad area, or that there can be wild dogs roaming while I'm working outdoors, etc.
For normal passenger vehicles, I can't imagine a good way to hide just a 16" shotgun or AR without attracting attention. (A kid or thief might still break into a vehicle to see what's inside a back-pack or to steal the radio) I'd simply place the gun on the floor of the vehicle and throw a very inconspicuous towel over it, or some laundry. I place the cloths wrinkled and messy looking so that it looks like a slob owns the car. LOL. My radio/cd player has a removable face, so that doesn't attract thieves either. But you DON'T want thieves breaking into your car looking for something else, and they find your gun. That's why sometimes I leave the glove compartment open too and nothing to attract them or make them curious.
Just got one of these - I don't normally carry a long gun, but it looks OK for the truck.
The only person I ever met who carried a long gun for self-defense was a police officer who carried a folding stock Mini-14 off duty, laying in the seat of his car. He had good reason to carry more firepower.
Sub 2K in a soft case, rigged under the seat with a combination lock and cable. If I suspect trouble or feel the need, will sometimes remove the combo lock and put it on the front seat next to me. Doesn't happen often, but I work in some pretty remote areas that are known favorites for meth labs.
One 17 round mag in the grip and 5 33 rounders in the soft case.
I keep a Remington 870, with 20" rifle sighted/IC barrel and extended mag under the rear seat in my Ram crew cab 4x4. Its as if that storage area was made for it. I keep a small supply of low recoil buck, slugs and birdshot on hand so the shotgun truly can be as versatile as it should be if pressed into any kind of service. If I plan on shooting that day, i often have one of my AR's as well with me.
I live in a rural, secure area well out of town and use the alarm when its parked, and pick strategic locations to park when in town to minimize the chance of theft.
With the amount of time i spend in the backcountry, it's some good reassurance. If you ever ran into a dozen illegals while driving thru some remote canyon, you'd know exactly why.... not to mention any other scenario that could pop up when frequenting such places.
I have a Taurus CT-40 (.40 S&W) under the rear seat of the F-150. They have been discontinued. It is a blow back design. I have several hundred rounds though it with no problems. I now have a Vortec red dot and fixed AR sights on it. My avatar shows what I did at 100 yards with iron sights once. I like it, for a $400 gun that I can afford to shoot frequently. It stays in the truck, not because I think I will ever need it, but because I can. http://i1036.photobucket.com/albums/a445/Papershoot/CT-40 002_zpsru7dfhcx.jpg
I've often thought I'd like to design a secure, easy access void in the driver or passenger seat that would allow a short rifle to be concealed there, stored vertically. I'd put that in my jeep in a heartbeat.
Rock River Arms Arms LAR-15 locked-n-loaded, muzzle down laying on the passenger seat with 20 rounds of TAP. Mossberg 500A in the trunk with Actif slugs.
I take a Sub2k with me. Either a 9 or a 40 depending on what I’m carrying on me. Disguised as a racket a small pack or a brief case with two. Never leave in car unattended or over night.
I keep a Sub2K Glock 9mm version in the trunk of my Chevy. It has a 33 round magazine in the rifle, a spare 17 round magazine. It is kept in an old gym bag.
When I had my extended cab Ford Ranger, I carried a Marlin 1894C 357 lever gun in the truck under an old blanket on the back floor.:cowboy:
I have a 9mm Mech-Tech conversion with a spare Glock lower. Needs to be a bit shorter and will start carrying it when I get the sliding stock for it. It shares the same magazines as my G34 EDC. There will be a number of 33 rd magazines also with it.
