I have an opportunity to purchase a gen 1 G17 here's the details:
- $850
- AU prefix, all matching, original black parts and non-captured RSA. Non-pencil barrel
- Includes the matching box and paperwork, does NOT include the original mags
- The gun is in excellent condition with two exceptions - there are two small holes drilled in the underside of the trigger guard and a discoloration of the finish on the nose of the slide
I know a few gen 1's have recently sold for a lot, but $850 still strikes me as high especially with those two holes in the trigger guard and the lack of the original mags. Thoughts?
I agree, albeit to a certain extent. It obviously hurts value and will continue to do so as these guns become more collectable, as they certainly appear to be on the right track to become. At $500, with the box and paperwork, I'd move on it. But at $850, which is in my opinion a premium (a few GB auctions notwithstanding) I think the holes render it a "walk away from" opportunity.
This may be a dumb question. I don't use attachments on my guns. Not that I am against them , just never felt the need. But what would the reasoning behind the original owner drilling holes in the trigger guard?

I sure wish I would have kept my few Gen 1a. But back at the time I needed the money for medical bills. And to be honest at the time I didn't consider how collectable " plastic guns " would become. Oh well that's life.
I have about a dozen Gen 1's across the A, B, and C prefix serial numbers. Several are in 99%+ condition and some have seen better days. I purchased some on the cheap and probably paid more than I had wished on others. Only you know what "hole" you are trying to fill in purchasing a gun (collecting, shooting, building, etc). If you want it badly enough and can afford it, then maybe its a good opportunity to pick one up. I do think $850 is on the high end for one that has been drilled/modified and is without original mags. But hell, Gen 1 boxes (w/ bullet molds) are going for $100+, IF you can even find them. The sales of Gen 1's on the auction sites recently has been mind boggling. Im not sure if this is the trend or a fad, but I do think if you look hard enough and long enough you will most likely find one in better condition and at a lower price.

That would depend on how they're oriented. First thing that comes to mind is the Arotek LAW 2000 laser system, which routed the wiring inside the trigger guard. But there would be more tell-tale signs of that.
