Picked up a really nice 19-2. I have been looking for a while and this one came up. The going price in Canada is $800-900 and I got this one for 650. Can't wait to get her to the range. Love these smiths!
My 19-4 was the second firearm I ever bought, and I'll never get rid of it.
This grand ole revolver is on it's second barrel (first one replaced after only 125 rounds through it!).
This revolver now has over 16,000 rounds through it.
It now only sees .357 cases, with 7.2 grains of Unique and Hornady 158 grain JHP .
(Basically a .38 Special load in .357 cases.)
VERY accurate too, btw.
I've got the very same gun but 19-3 and have absolutely no complaints. I was looking for a 4" barrel as that is my favorite but settled on the 6" because it was a good deal.
I shoot mainly Missouri Bullets 158 grain SWC's in it backed by a decent charge of Unique.

I purchased a 19-3 Texas Ranger Commemorative a few years back. After running a box of 38's thru it I knew it was special and it became a safe queen. The original owner fired it sparingly as it was a safe queen for him too. Here's a pic of mine in its case accompanied by its matching serial # Bowie knife. Good luck with your purchase.

Quite The Handgun In-Deed!! Great Shooters. Love the Balance. Had the Grips Replaced with Hogue, and it handles even better!!

VERY accurate too, btw.[/I am going to try your load for it. I have a ton of 357 brass and not as much of 38.
I use a VERY light crimp. No real need for anything more, with this load.
This load does have enough 'umph' to knock down NRA Hunter Pistol Silhouettes, from the old days, at 100 yards.
(An 'old guy' that was in his late 60s, back in '84 or '85 gave me this load.) He used it in his 10" TC Contender.
Sometimes improvements, other times cost cutting.
For example, say S&W brings out the model 88 Magnum. After a few years, reports come in of cylinder gas ring fouling, so they change the design of the gas ring. Now it's model 88-1.
Fast forward a few more years, they introduce a few different barrel thickness or length options, plus they change to a Baughman quick draw front sight. Now it's model 88-2.
Somewhere long the lines, they delete a sideplate screw, change the internals a little so the hammer stud doesn't break anymore. Now it's model 88-3.
Since they devised a swell new way to attach the barrel and they don't seem to have problems anymore with case heads letting go, they ditch the pinned barrel and recessed Chambers. Now it's model 88-4.....and so on...
I think it varies from model to model, but I'd think most would say no. Seems like the majority of opinions I see here and elsewhere prefer the earlier models, when there was usually more time spend handfitting parts by smiths. Alot of the changes as the years went on were for cutting costs. I am currently looking for a 4" model 19, and want an earlier one...definitely early enough to still have a pinned barrel & recessed cylinders.
I bought this beauty (19-3) last year by accidentally bidding for it on gun broker. I was looking to replace the Smith 19 that I bought back in 79. When my daughter was born I signed over my guns to a friend to hold for me. Well, you know about good friends.

It's a great looking revolver. I'm glad you found one. They seem to be few and far between finding them. The Smith & Wesson Model 19 with a 6 inch barrel is my favorite .357 Magnum revolver. I bought a new one in the late 70's and later let my cousin talk me into trading it to him for a Colt Trooper Mk lll Nickel 6". Bad trade and I regretted that so bad. I found a Model 19-5 in a pawn shop a few years back. They had it priced $550. It has a 98% finish on it. After I done some wheeling and dealing I got it for $485 out the door. It looks just like yours with the same front sight and grips. It's called the Combat Magnum. I doubt this one will leave me only when I'm dead and buried and then it will go to my grandson. Now I would love to find a Model 66 for a good deal.
Generally speaking the changes in a "dash" number matter only to collectors and S&W "geeks" like me (and I couldn't tell you what they mean without looking it up). They don't affect shooting at all really.
I'm one of those who just likes the "older the better" for no particular reason other than it's older.
My first handgun was a Model 19...probably a -4, but I knew nothing of such things in those days. Since then I've probably owned a dozen or more (including a few Model 66's the 19's SS brother). I'll buy one, shoot it, sell it, buy another. Makes no sense at all. Especially when all of mine have been 4" models. I've owned as many as four at one time. Down to just one these days, a -4. It's pictured in my avatar.
That's a nice one the OP has. I've never cared for the 6" models myself, but I know others love them. Especially in Canada where they can't own the 4" I believe.
There is an ongoing debate of what type ammo to shoot in them. I don't know. I pretty much limit mine to 38 Specials these days, simply because I don't shoot anything but paper targets and they don't take a lot of killing.

While I have sold a lot of guns over the years, I held on to all S&W M-19s that I owned - just the one with the stag grips was given to my son. I love six inch barreled revolvers just as much as the shorter versions and am glad that I am not under those restrictions, especially now that I found a S&W M-19-P!
