I am an older shooter. I have owned just about every make of handgun in my life. Only recently did I purchase my first Glock, a G-42.

Before this I heard from different shooters that they were (not my words), "cheap plastic", "dangerous", "hard to shoot accurately", "over priced for the quality", and etc. I literally had visions of these things bowing up in the hand.

While I didn't actively think on these comments subconsciously they had an effect on me as I made my purchasing decisions.

Now, having purchased and range tested my G-42 several times I am kicking myself for waiting so long. Stupid, stupid, stupid!!!

Now, I may just have to go out and try another Glock.

I have turned into a fan.

Congrats on the 42 and welcome to GT! If you like the 42, then you really need to get a hold of the "one" that Glock built it reputation on and that would be the Glock 17. The G19 would be a fantastic choice as well.

I believe every firearms enthusiast should have a Glock 17 or Glock 19. They really are fantastic pistols and as you have seen, they just work. Most folks who bash them more than likely have never shot one.

If you really want a fun shooter, try out a G20 or G40 in 10mm flavor.

Have had my G42 for about a year and have had my G17 for 29 years.

I was in the same boat, until I bought my 19. Took a while to learn to shoot that well but when I did I really liked the 19. Then I bought my son a 34. Came across a good deal on a 42 so I bought that. I really liked the 42 so I thought if the 42 is a lot of fun, the 43 must be even more fun, so now I have a 43.

Rented a 21 at the range last week and found shooting the 21 to be enjoyable. Hmmm...I get my GSSF Pistol Purchase coupon in August.

Although I have 5 Glocks (I had seven) I'm not a Glock fan, so if I say something good about them I mean it.
(A friend gave me a G17 and G26. I disliked the guns so much I gave them back)

I have two early G42's. Have had all the problems with the G42's that they are famous for.
After something over a thousand rounds the guns still aren't reliable enough to carry.

But still I like the size and how accurate the G42 is and I like to shoot it.
I've loaded several thousand more rounds of .380 for them.

If I can ever trust it enough, I'll put it in the pocket carry rotation. (probably as a 9x18 Makarov caliber).

At present I have the 9x18 barrel in one G42. It was far from just a drop in conversion but after some work it's about as reliable as the .380 G42, with about the same accuracy.

My 42 was manufactured in '14. Lots of problems and a really heavy trigger. Bought the new OEM (-) connector and that helped the trigger weight a little. Finally called Glock two months ago, gave them the serial number and they said to send it to them (Glock pays for shipping both ways) with my magazines.

Glock replaced;

1) Magazines - swapped three 01 and 02 magazines for new 03 magazines.

2) Trigger Housing with Ejector

3) Trigger with Trigger Bar

4) Slide Stop Lever with Spring

They sent the 42 back to within a week.

I can't measure it, but the trigger is much lighter, I would guess they brought it within their spec of 5.5 lbs.

Put 400 rounds through it and the pistol runs perfectly. I had to adjust my grip slightly so I don't push up the slide bar with my right thumb. No FTFs, no FTEs, and no failures of the slide to lock back on the last round. Just fun fun fun.

Congratulations.

As recent as 3 months ago, I, too was an ignorant non-Glock guy....NOW, it's all I think about..LOL

Good to read that you are happy with your new Glock. Having owned most brands of handguns I would suggest not shooting the Glock side by side with a Pardini or Brown or Hammerli or with a Mauser as it would likely be a bit of a disappointment.

This thread got me wanting to shoot the G42.
So I replaced the 9x18 barrel with the Glock barrel.

I decided to shoot an even 100 rounds.
Everything was going good through magazine 13.
Then with magazines 14 and 15 there was a few failures to feed and a couple failures to eject the fired case.
These two magazines had functioned fine just minutes before.

Magazine 16 functioned OK.

But Hey! Who needs 100 rounds in a gun fight anyhow. :)

Well, you started with a good one. My G42 is maybe my favorite Glock and that is saying a lot as I have a number that I REALLY like. The reason I like it so much is mainly how well I shoot it. I have a G35 that I use with target loads that can do some amazing things practical pistol shooting wise. I am almost as good with my G42 as I am with my G35 and the G42 fits in my pocket!

My G42 has been bullet proof feed reliability wise, even with the MagGuts +1 magazine extensions.

I owned a G36 years ago. Decided it was not for me and gave it to friend for payment when he helped me refloor my mom's kitchen. I bought a G19.4 this Monday To give Glock another go. I'm very fascinated with it. Nothing wrong with 36, but 19 fits my hand perfectly without adding a backstrap. My nephew came up from Florida and others his G19. A Christmas present from his just married wife. He wanted me to shoot it, so I gave it a try. Then I started to get a desire for one myself.

"My G42 has been bullet proof feed reliability wise, even with the MagGuts +1 magazine extensions."

I use MagGuts +1 in a couple of my 43 magazines with zero problems. Now that I have my 42 sorted out I am going to use MagGuts in some of the 42 magazines.

I had zero luck with the MagGuts kit in my G43. I tried everything and it just didn't work. I am convinced it is my gun as my ejector really presses into the head of the top round in the magazine, canting to very far off centerline of the chamber. I have seen other G43's where the ejector didn't even touch the top round.

I think kits that seem to work, even on guns that are more like mine, the spring is much stronger than the MagGuts leaf spring setup.

I too am an older shooter. I didn't vote for Nixon but I had the choice. I carried a Colt 1911 but riled at the lack of options, such as good sights, good trigger and front strap crosshatching. First I bought a Kimber for an outrageous price, but my Gold Combat had everything standard. Then the 10mm Auto bug bit me due to Jeff Cooper. I certainly couldn't afford a Bren Ten and magazines were pricey. Enter my first plastic pistol, the Glock 20. Frankly, I hated the big bulky grips but the 15 rounds of Winchester Silvertips, 175 grains at 1250 fps (not real world but nearly 41 Magnum) were very comforting. I carried a 4 inch S&W 629 for years so the relatively lighter and higher capacity Glock 20 set the bar for carry pistols for me. I have the usual small understudies, G35, G41 (lesser caliber top end but 45 ACP +P is where SD cartridges come to set their benchmark),G30SF, G26. I have learned to live with the high cap ergonomics, there is no such thing as a free lunch! Keep learning and being older doesn't look so bad. My hunting revolver is going to have a red dot next fall!
