I'm branching out from my AK's and want to pick up my first AR. I've narrowed my choices down to the Springfield Armory Saint and a Colt LE6920. The Saint is at my LGS for $899, but I really want to have them transfer me a 6920....They said I am too hung up on wanting milspec parts, but I think they want the whole sale and not a $50 dollar transfer fee. If I got the Colt magpul edition, I would remove the flip up rear sight and install a Colt A2 "carry handle" rear sight. I'm asking you guys about this because I'm not experienced in the AR game at all. What are the pro's and con's of these rifles? Or name another option for $1,000 or less. Your opinions and expertise are greatly appreciated!
I like saving weight but not at the expense of barrel thickness. ibwanr things to be solid first. Light second. I opted for a milled receiver AK because I wanted the solid feel. I try to save weight by being a minimalist with the accessories side of things.
If the extra weight was towards the chamber of the barrel that would make sense. But the government profile barrel, which is thicker at the muzzle, makes no sense and really came about by accident. There's a reason other rifles don't use that asinine barrel profile.
Right now I have two Colts a 6724 and a Colt CRE Competition Rifle. The 6724 is an outstanding rifle. Crazy accurate. The CRE is also very accurate, it did have a cycling problem due to a miss aligned gas block. Which is one of the reasons that I prefer I pinned gas block. Many companies are using the set screw gas blocks or clamped on.
I also have a S&W M&P 15 MOE. I love the trigger guard being part of the reciever. The rifle is reliable and accuracy is acceptable for hunting.
Last one is an SBR built on a DPMS reciever. No issues with it.
If you build an AR (Frankingun) you will not get any where near what you think you should if you try to trade it in.
In general Colts keep their value better than other brands. Yes Daniel Defense and Noveski and some of the other high end brands also bring good prices used or on a trade in also. But most people new to AR's have heard of Colt.
