Large male attacker armed with big knife, mentally psychotic and high on meth.
At about 21 ft you get off one shot before firing pin breaks, mother of all jams...
Shot hits center of attackers chest, which bullet do you want it to be (only listed choices)

I say the .45...then the gun with remaining rounds weigh enough to throw and inflict injury...lol
Kind of hard to beat a big bore on a one to one shot. 9my might expand to .45 but the .45 is guaranteed to be .45.
Now if you you said I had three or even two I might change my answer.

One shot?
The most powerful one of course. 357 SIG

Although my carry guns are mostly small 9mm (SIG P938), because of the gun's size, I would carry the 45 or 357 SIG of I could carry a larger gun.

I have a Glock 33 (357 SIG). If I was going to carry a G26 size gun it would be the G33, not the G26 9mm.

Of all the many 9mm, 45, 40 cal pistols I have and could choose for a night stand gun I picked this 40 with a 357 SIG barrel Taurus PT 101.

Ironically, I voted for the 10mm Gold Dot 180 gr. (~1,150 fps)
which is the only listed caliber that I no longer own. My second choice is the .357 SIG and I have plenty of those.

i go with the gold dot... proven performance, good penetration and expansion

then pull out my BU gun :)
Excellent option, for those of us that carry one. ;)

Gotta be a .45. It's what every other round wants to be when it grows up.

He brought a knife to a gunfight.
Time for my Sean Connery imitation.

21 feet is the minimum distance needed for the average officer to have enough time to draw and fire against an attacker, before attacker is on him / her.
Any closer and the odds of drawing and getting of a shot(s) before attacker makes contact becomes very unlikely.
About 2:46 into the video illustrates this reality (Although older, whole video worth watching).

The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning toward the 10mm or the .45ACP. If nothing else, it's a bigger gun to use as a club.
